WhatsApp, Instagram or email: which channel to automate

Slide, by Synquic, automates customer messaging on WhatsApp, Instagram and email from one builder, one shared inbox and one contact record per person. WhatsApp covers the widest range of jobs (support, lead capture, follow-up and commerce): you reply freely inside a 24-hour window, reach people later with Meta-approved templates and broadcasts, and Meta charges for each message. Instagram answers people who comment or message you, only within 24 hours of their last message and with no broadcasts, while email sends sequences and campaigns from your own domain with an unsubscribe built in, drawing on your plan's email credits.

Facts on this page were last reviewed on 11 October 2026. See the key facts and sources.

Who it is for

The buyer and the problem

Support, marketing and sales teams that hear from customers on more than one channel and want to know what each channel can and cannot do before they build anything.

The three channels look alike from the outside and run on different rules. WhatsApp lets a business start a conversation only with an approved template and charges per message; Instagram lets a business answer only people who wrote in the last 24 hours; email can reach any address you hold, but several markets require consent and an unsubscribe in every marketing email. A flow built for the wrong channel is a flow the platform will not deliver.

What Slide does

Supported capabilities, mapped to the product

  • WhatsApp: bots, AI agents, templates and campaigns

Menu and keyword bots, an AI agent that answers from your knowledge base, leads from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, QR codes and forms, scheduled template broadcasts to tags or segments, and Shopify order and recovery messages. See WhatsApp automation.

  • Instagram: comments and DMs turned into conversations

Comment-to-DM on chosen or all posts with keyword rules, public and private replies, story-reply and live-comment triggers, quick-reply questions, email capture and an AI agent. See Instagram automation.

  • Email: sequences and campaigns from your own domain

Sequences of a first email and up to five threaded follow-ups that stop on reply, and campaigns to segments with A/B tests, open and click tracking and one-click unsubscribe. See email automation.

  • One inbox for all three

WhatsApp, Instagram and email conversations reach the same shared inbox. WhatsApp and email threads can be assigned; the WhatsApp view counts down the 24-hour window and offers templates once it closes.

  • Handoff that works the same on every channel

A handoff step leaves the conversation in the inbox with what the customer already said and emails the team. On Instagram, a teammate's reply also takes over from the AI agent.

How the three channels differ

On WhatsApp, a customer's message opens a 24-hour window for free-form replies. Anything you send outside it, and any conversation you start, needs a template approved by Meta, and the person must have opted in to hear from you. Meta charges for each message by category and by the recipient's country, and since 1 October 2026 it charges for service replies inside the window too, after the first 1,000 each month for every business number. In return, WhatsApp is where Slide runs template broadcasts, Shopify order updates and timed follow-ups to a phone number.

On Instagram, a business can only answer. Meta allows replies within 24 hours of the person's last message and one private reply to each comment within 7 days. Slide sends no broadcasts and no messages after the window, and story mentions are not a trigger. That makes Instagram a front door: comment-to-DM, story replies and quick questions that move a conversation forward while the person is still engaged.

Email has no reply window. Slide sends from your own authenticated domain through sequences and campaigns, which carry an unsubscribe and skip addresses that have unsubscribed or bounced, and each send draws on your plan's email credits. The automation "send email" step is the exception: it adds no unsubscribe link and does not check the unsubscribe list, so keep it for transactional mail and send marketing through sequences and campaigns.

The law differs by channel and by market as well. WhatsApp requires opt-in before you message someone first, several markets have rules that reach Instagram direct messages, and several countries set rules aimed at marketing email. The locations pages set out what applies where.

Services · Messaging automation by channel

One contact record and one builder across channels

Every channel writes to the same contact. A person who comments on Instagram, messages on WhatsApp and opens an email is one record, matched on phone number first and email second, with the same tags, segments, custom fields and lifecycle stage. Contacts can be imported; there is no contacts export today.

Automations for all three channels are built in one builder with 41 trigger types: WhatsApp and Instagram messages, Shopify and HubSpot events, Google Sheets and Forms, Meta and Google lead forms, website forms, contact changes, webhooks and schedules. Conditions, routers, delays and wait-until steps (a fixed date and time) work the same whatever started the run, and every run is logged step by step.

Published setups show the pattern. Mirza International runs its flows across six channels on one contact record, and Newport moves interest from Instagram comments into DMs and then into WhatsApp for longer conversations. Both case studies describe the setup, not measured results.

Pricing

How the cost is made up

Every channel runs on the same Slide plan. A workspace created with an Indian number is billed in rupees and every other workspace in US dollars; plans and current prices are on the pricing page, paid plans start with a 14-day trial, and AI steps depend on the plan. Outside India, confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.

Usage differs by channel. WhatsApp messages are charged by Meta, per message, and drawn from Slide's prepaid wallet; since 1 October 2026 service replies count too, after 1,000 free each month per business number. Email sends draw on the email credits that come with the plan, and a sequence pauses when they run out. Meta's per-message pricing is a WhatsApp Business Platform rule, so Instagram replies add no per-message wallet charge.

Fit and limits

When this fits, and what it does not do

A good fit when

  • Customers reach you on more than one of WhatsApp, Instagram and email, and you want one record per person.
  • The jobs are support, lead capture, follow-up or Shopify order journeys.
  • You would rather build every channel's flows in one builder than run a tool per channel.

Needs a person when

  • Complaints, refunds and anything that needs judgement, on any channel.
  • An Instagram conversation that needs more than 24 hours to settle: a person has to reply while the window is open.
  • Any message the bot or AI agent cannot classify, or a customer who asks for a person.

Not established by this page

  • Which channel will perform better for your business: Slide publishes no measured outcomes.
  • Where customer data is hosted. Ask the Slide team before you sign.
  • Revenue credited across channels: there is no cross-channel attribution report.
Questions

Direct answers

Which channel should we automate first for customer support?

Usually the one your customers already use to reach you. On WhatsApp, Slide gives you menu bots, an AI agent that answers from your content, a shared inbox with assignment and a countdown of the 24-hour window, and a handoff step that emails the team. Instagram support works for questions that arrive as DMs, but every reply must land within 24 hours of the person's last message and threads cannot be assigned to a named teammate. Email support runs through a connected mailbox whose threads reach the same inbox with assignment and open or closed states, and an AI agent can answer email too.

Which channel works for lead generation?

Each catches a different kind of interest. On Instagram, a comment with a keyword gets a private reply, and the conversation continues if the person answers, within Meta's limits of one private reply per comment and 24 hours after their last message. On WhatsApp, leads arrive from Click-to-WhatsApp ads (free for 72 hours when you reply within 24), QR codes, links, a website chat button, WhatsApp forms and Meta or Google lead forms. Website popups and forms can start an email or WhatsApp follow-up, though Slide has no double opt-in. The lead generation page goes through the options.

Can one workflow use more than one channel?

Yes, within each channel's rules. A Shopify event can trigger WhatsApp and email messages, a WhatsApp campaign has an email fallback, and an Instagram flow can capture an email address into the contact record so later email reaches the same person. Because every channel writes to one contact, matched on phone first and email second, the history follows the person. What a workflow cannot do is break a channel's rules: it cannot send an Instagram DM after the 24-hour window, or start a WhatsApp conversation with someone who has not opted in.

How do the costs differ between WhatsApp, Instagram and email?

All three run on one Slide plan, billed in rupees for a workspace created with an Indian number and in US dollars otherwise; prices are on the pricing page. WhatsApp adds Meta's per-message charges, by category and recipient country, drawn from a prepaid wallet; since 1 October 2026 service replies are charged after 1,000 free each month per business number. Email sends draw on the plan's email credits. Meta's per-message pricing applies to the WhatsApp Business Platform, so Instagram replies add no wallet charge.

What does each channel need before we can start?

WhatsApp needs a Meta business portfolio, Meta business verification before sending at scale (allow several business days), a number that is not registered on the WhatsApp apps, a display name, and Meta-approved templates for anything outside the 24-hour window. Instagram needs a professional (Business or Creator) account linked to a Facebook Page. Email needs a sending domain verified with the DNS records Slide shows, plus a connected mailbox if replies should reach the inbox and stop sequences.

Which markets have their own pages, and why only those?

A market gets its own page only where it changes the answer. WhatsApp has the most, because Meta prices each message by the recipient's country and calling availability differs by country. Canada and South Africa have their own Instagram page: South Africa's Information Regulator lists Instagram DMs as electronic direct marketing, and Canada's CASL counts instant messaging accounts as electronic addresses. Qatar's guideline also names social media; the Qatar location page covers it. Email has pages for Singapore, Kenya, South Africa and Canada, which set rules aimed at marketing email. Everywhere else, the locations pages carry the local law for every channel.

Key facts

Key facts

Start with the channel your customers already use to reach you, then add the others on the same contact record. Slide is a reasonable fit when WhatsApp support, lead capture, follow-up or Shopify order journeys are the core job, with Instagram comment-to-DM and email sequences alongside, all in one builder and one inbox. It is a weaker fit if you need Instagram broadcasts or messages after the 24-hour window, branching email sequences or double opt-in, an integration that is not built (WooCommerce, Zoho, Salesforce), or a report that attributes revenue across channels.
