WhatsApp, Instagram and email automation for businesses in South Africa
In South Africa, POPIA section 69 sets who you may market to electronically: people who consented, or your own customers about similar products, while a non-customer may be approached only once, to ask for consent. That rule covers electronic direct marketing, and the Information Regulator lists Instagram direct messages among it. Slide automates all three of its channels for South African businesses from one contact record, bills the workspace in US dollars, and charges WhatsApp messages to +27 numbers on Meta's South Africa rate line.
Facts on this page were last reviewed on 11 October 2026. See the key facts and sources.
The buyer and the problem
South African businesses that sell to and support customers on WhatsApp, Instagram and email, and agencies or brands abroad that message South African customers.
Under POPIA the risky moment is the first marketing message to someone who has not bought from you. A buyer needs to know how a platform keeps customers and prospects apart, how an opt-out travels with every message, and what happens with languages other than English in a country with 12 official ones.
WhatsApp in South Africa
Messages to +27 numbers are priced on Meta's South Africa line. Meta has no rand rate card and Slide bills the workspace in US dollars, with WhatsApp charges drawn from a prepaid wallet. South African business numbers are not on Meta's list of numbers barred from placing WhatsApp calls, so calling is open to them.
For marketing, split your contacts before you send. Tag the customers whose details you collected in a sale, with a chance to object at that point, and send them only messages about similar products; tag prospects who gave consent separately. A campaign goes to the tag or segment you pick, and Slide skips unsubscribed and blocked contacts on its own. Every marketing template should name the business and say how to stop, and the stop word belongs in Slide's opt-out keywords, which start empty. More on WhatsApp automation in South Africa.
Instagram in South Africa
Here the regulator names Instagram directly: the Information Regulator lists direct messaging on Instagram among the forms of electronic direct marketing that section 69 covers. A DM that promotes something follows the same consent, identification and opt-out rules as an email.
Slide's Instagram automation messages only people who reached out first: replies within 24 hours of their last message, one private reply per comment within 7 days, and no broadcast DMs. Where a flow moves from answering to promoting, identify the business, say how to stop, and record consent on the contact. Instagram automation in South Africa covers Instagram under these rules in more depth.
Email in South Africa
For email, the practical question is which list each address belongs to. A non-customer may be emailed once, to ask for consent. A customer may be emailed about similar products if they could object when the address was collected and can object in every email.
A Slide sequence sends a first email and up to 5 follow-ups, so do not put prospects who have not consented into one: the guidance allows a single approach. Campaigns carry one-click unsubscribe and suppress hard bounces and complaints, and sequences add an unsubscribe line and, with a connected mailbox, stop when the person replies. The automation "send email" step has no unsubscribe, so keep it for transactional mail. Setup details are on email automation in South Africa.
What is specific to South Africa
Consent, or the customer exception for similar products
Section 69 of the Protection of Personal Information Act allows electronic direct marketing to people who consented, or to existing customers about similar products, provided they could object when their details were collected and can object in every message.
Source:Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Non-customers may be approached once
A person who is not a customer may be contacted a single time, to ask for consent. Build that approach as one message, not a sequence of follow-ups.
Source:Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Sender identity and a way to stop in every message
Each direct marketing message must identify the sender and give a way to stop further messages. In Slide that means a business name and a stop instruction in every marketing template, and an unsubscribe in every campaign email.

South Africa's official languages are English, Afrikaans, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga and South African Sign Language. Slide's template editor has English only among them; replies in the others are possible free-form inside the 24-hour window.

What these claims rest on
- POPIA section 69 allows electronic direct marketing only with consent, or to existing customers
A non-customer may be approached once to ask for consent. Customers may be marketed similar products if they could object at collection and in every message. Every message identifies the sender and gives a way to stop. The Regulator lists direct messaging on Instagram among electronic direct marketing.

Meta lists countries where a business number cannot place calls: Nigerian, Egyptian, Canadian and US business numbers are on it; Kenyan and South African numbers are not. Customers can still call the business where the Cloud API is available. Calling needs a messaging limit of at least 2,000.
- WhatsApp campaigns send approved templates to tags or segments, with scheduling and delayed follow-ups
Scheduled broadcasts to tags or segments, delayed follow-up steps, and an email fallback. Unsubscribed and blocked contacts are skipped. SMS fallback works for Indian numbers only.
How the cost is made up
A workspace created with a +27 number is billed by Slide in US dollars; rands are not offered. Plans and current prices are on the pricing page, and paid plans open with a 14-day trial. Before you subscribe, confirm the payment method for the plan and for wallet top-ups with the Slide team.
The per-message cost is WhatsApp. Meta prices each message by category and by the recipient's country, South Africa's own line for +27 numbers, and Slide deducts it from your prepaid wallet; sends stop at zero. From 1 October 2026 service replies inside the window are billable once a business number passes 1,000 free service messages in a month, while conversations opened from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad remain free for 72 hours when you reply within 24 hours.
The wallet shows your account's exact per-message rate. Email sends use the email credits in your plan.

Direct answers
Does Slide have an office or team in South Africa?
Synquic lists no South African office, staff member or phone line, and this page does not suggest otherwise. Slide is sold online by Synquic, a company founded in India, and sign-up works with a South African number. Support is by email, the top plans include a dedicated account manager, and a 30-minute demo can be booked. Ask how South African business hours will be covered, as support hours are not published.
Source:About SynquicSlide pricingWhich currency will we pay in?
US dollars. Each Slide workspace is billed in rupees if it was created with an Indian phone number and in dollars otherwise, and the choice is made when the workspace is created. Meta has no rand rate card for WhatsApp. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.
Source:Billing and wallet guideSlide pricingMeta: WhatsApp pricing (opens in a new tab)Which languages can our messages use?
Of South Africa's 12 official languages, only English is in Slide's template editor; Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa and the others are not. Templates are what you send after the 24-hour window, so those go out in English. Inside the window, replies can be in any language, and an AI agent uses another language only when its instructions say so. The dashboard is in English.

Under POPIA section 69 you may contact a non-customer once, to ask for consent, and market to them only if they give it. Existing customers can receive marketing about similar products if they had a chance to object when you collected their details and get one in every message. In Slide, keep consented prospects and customers in separate tags or segments and send each campaign to the right one, with your business name and a way to stop in every template.
Source:Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Campaigns guideContacts guideDoes POPIA cover Instagram DMs?
Yes. The Information Regulator's guidance lists direct messaging on Instagram among forms of electronic direct marketing. Slide's Instagram automation replies to people who wrote or commented first, within Meta's 24-hour and 7-day limits, and sends no broadcast DMs. When a DM flow moves on to promotion, identify the business, offer a way to stop, and record consent on the contact.
Source:Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Meta: Instagram Messaging API (opens in a new tab)Meta: Private replies (opens in a new tab)Can we use email sequences for prospects?
Be careful. A Slide sequence sends a first email and up to 5 follow-ups, while section 69 allows a non-customer to be approached once to ask for consent. Use a single email to ask, and add the person to a sequence only after they agree. Sequences and campaigns carry an unsubscribe and skip unsubscribed and suppressed addresses; the automation "send email" step does not, so keep it for transactional mail.
Source:Campaigns guideInformation Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Campaigns guideCan our team call customers on WhatsApp?
As far as Meta's country rules go, yes: South African business numbers are not on Meta's list of numbers that cannot place WhatsApp calls. Meta enables calling for numbers with a messaging limit of at least 2,000, and customers can call your number too.

Slide is a reasonable fit for a South African business that can separate customers from prospects in its contact data, mostly talks to people who message it first, and is content with English templates. It is a weaker fit if your marketing depends on repeated outreach to non-customers, templates in Afrikaans or another official language, or billing in rand.
