Instagram automation for comments, story replies and DMs

Slide, by Synquic, automates Instagram on Meta's official Instagram APIs: it turns comments on chosen posts into private DMs, answers story replies and messages with quick questions or an AI agent, captures email addresses into your contacts, and puts every thread in a shared inbox. It only ever answers: Meta allows replies within 24 hours of the person's last message and one private reply per comment, and Slide sends no broadcasts and nothing after the window. No MENA-wide rule for Instagram messaging was found, so each country's own law applies. Canada and South Africa have their own Instagram page: South Africa's Information Regulator lists Instagram DMs as electronic direct marketing, and Canada's CASL counts instant messaging accounts as electronic addresses. Qatar's guideline also names social media; the Qatar location page covers it.

Who it is for

The buyer and the problem

Brands, creators and service businesses whose customers find them on Instagram and ask in comments, story replies and DMs, and who want those questions answered while the person is still there.

Interest on Instagram is public and short-lived: a comment asking for the price, a reply to a story, a DM late at night. Answering by hand misses much of it, and a missed message soon cannot be answered at all, because Meta closes the reply window 24 hours after the person's last message. Automation helps only if it moves the conversation forward inside that window and gets anything that needs a person to the team in time.

What Slide does

Supported capabilities, mapped to the product

  • Comment-to-DM with keyword rules

Watch chosen posts or all of them for keywords, post a public reply, and send the commenter a private DM that opens the conversation. Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of it.

  • Story-reply, live-comment and link triggers

Replies to your stories, comments during a live broadcast and links that open a DM can each start their own automation.

  • Quick-reply questions and branching

Ask a question with tap-to-answer options, branch on the answer, and send the right reply or link for each path.

  • Email capture into the contact record

A flow can ask for an email address and save it to the person's contact, the same record WhatsApp and email use, so you can reach them later on a channel that has no 24-hour window.

  • An AI agent that answers from your content

An AI agent replies to DMs from a knowledge base you provide. When a teammate replies in the inbox, the teammate takes over from the agent. AI steps depend on your plan.

  • An Instagram inbox inside the shared inbox

Instagram threads sit in their own inbox and in the unified inbox beside WhatsApp and email, so the team sees every conversation in one place. Instagram threads cannot be assigned to a named teammate.

  • Insights and run logs

Instagram insights sit beside step-by-step logs of every automation run, so you can see where a conversation stopped.

Example workflow, illustrative

A comment asking for the price, turned into a conversation

A skincare brand posts a reel about a new serum and expects comments asking what it costs. This is how one comment moves through the flow it builds in Slide.

  1. Trigger

    A follower comments "price"

The keyword rule on the reel matches the comment and starts the automation.

  2. Action

A public reply and one private DM

Slide posts a public reply ("Sent you the details") and sends the commenter one private DM with the price and a question: "Is this for dry or oily skin?" That private DM is the only one Meta allows for this comment.

  3. Customer interaction

The follower answers, and the window opens

The follower taps "Dry". Their reply opens a 24-hour window, so the flow can continue: it recommends a routine and offers a product link.

  4. Qualification

The flow asks for an email address

It offers a skin-care guide by email and asks for an address. The follower types it, and Slide saves it to their contact record.

  5. Human handoff

    A teammate takes over

The follower asks whether the serum is safe alongside a prescription cream, which the AI agent has been told not to answer. A handoff step emails the team, and the teammate who replies in the inbox takes over from the agent, within 24 hours of the follower's last message.

  6. Exception

If nobody replies within 24 hours

Slide cannot send an Instagram message after the window closes. The conversation resumes only if the follower writes again; the email address captured earlier is the way back, for email the person has agreed to receive.

  7. Recorded outcome

The follower is now a contact

The contact carries the email address, a "serum enquiry" tag and the conversation, and the automation run is logged step by step.

Setup

What you need, and the launch sequence

Requirements

  • An Instagram professional account

A Business or Creator account. Personal accounts cannot be connected.

    Source:Instagram setup guide
  • A linked Facebook Page, with admin access

The account must be linked to a Facebook Page, and you need admin access through the Meta business portfolio to connect it.

    Source:Instagram setup guide
  • Keywords and the posts they watch

Decide which posts or reels to watch and which words should trigger a DM. Each comment gets one private reply, so make it count.

  • Content for the AI agent

Product details, prices, policies and the questions you are asked most. The agent answers only from what you give it.

  • An automation disclosure, where the law asks for one

Meta requires automated chats to tell people they are talking to an automated service when applicable law requires it.

Launch sequence

  1. Switch the account to professional, link it to your Facebook Page and connect it in Slide (Instagram setup guide).

  2. Pick the posts and keywords, then write the public reply and the single private DM each comment will get.

  3. Build the DM flow in the automation builder: quick questions, email capture, the AI agent, and a handoff step on every path that needs a person.

  4. Decide who watches the inbox, since Instagram threads cannot be assigned to a named teammate and every human reply must land within 24 hours of the person's last message.

  5. Add a line saying the chat is automated wherever your law requires one.

  6. Test from a second account: comment, reply to a story, send a DM. Then publish the post.

Local considerations

Instagram rules by market, including MENA

Meta's Instagram rules are the same everywhere. What changes is each country's marketing and data law, and several markets on this site have rules that reach direct messages.

This is a summary of public rules for orientation, not legal advice. Slide does not certify that any business's messaging complies with local law; check your own obligations with a qualified adviser.

Pricing

How the cost is made up

Instagram automation runs on the Slide plan. A workspace created with an Indian number is billed in rupees and every other workspace in US dollars; plans and current prices are on the pricing page, paid plans start with a 14-day trial, and AI agent steps depend on the plan. Outside India, confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.

Meta's per-message pricing is a WhatsApp Business Platform rule, so Instagram replies add no per-message charge to your Slide wallet. If a flow moves a conversation to WhatsApp, Meta's WhatsApp charges apply to the messages sent there.

Fit and limits

When this fits, and what it does not do

A good fit when

  • Posts and reels that draw comments asking for prices, links or details.
  • DMs and story replies that follow a pattern a short flow or an AI agent can answer.
  • A team that can watch the inbox and reply within 24 hours when a flow hands over.

Needs a person when

  • Anything a flow hands over: the teammate's reply must land within 24 hours of the person's last message.
  • Complaints, order problems and anything that needs judgement.
  • Image and voice-note DMs, which do not start automations.

Not established by this page

  • Any change in followers, leads or sales: Slide publishes no measured outcomes.
  • Whether your country's regulator treats a given DM flow as marketing: check with a qualified adviser.

Questions

Direct answers

What can Slide automate on Instagram?

Comment-to-DM on chosen or all posts with keyword rules, public and private replies, story-reply, live-comment and link triggers, quick-reply questions with branching, and email capture into your contacts. An AI agent can answer DMs from your knowledge base. Every thread lands in an Instagram inbox and in the unified inbox beside WhatsApp and email.

What do we need to connect an Instagram account?

An Instagram professional account, either Business or Creator, linked to a Facebook Page, and admin access through your Meta business portfolio. Personal accounts cannot be connected. Once the account is connected, flows can reply only to people who have written to you, within 24 hours of their last message.

Source:Instagram setup guideMeta: Instagram Messaging API (opens in a new tab)

Can we send DMs to followers who have not written to us, or broadcast to them?

No. Meta lets a business message someone on Instagram only after that person has written to it, and only within 24 hours of their last message, so Instagram cannot be used for cold outreach. Slide sends no broadcast or outbound DMs. To reach people again later, capture an email address in the conversation and use email, within your market's consent rules.

What happens when the 24-hour window closes?

Slide cannot send anything more until the person writes again. Meta does allow a human agent, not a bot, to reply for up to 7 days with a human-agent tag when an issue could not be settled in 24 hours, and never with promotional content. Slide does not use that tag, so plan for a teammate to reply inside the 24 hours.

How many messages can a comment-to-DM flow send?

One private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment. After that, the flow can continue only if the person replies, and then within 24 hours of their last message. Design the private DM to ask a question, so the person has a reason to answer and the conversation can go on.

Which triggers does Slide not support on Instagram?

Story mentions do not start an automation; story replies do. DMs that contain only an image or a voice note do not start an automation either. Slide also sends no broadcasts and nothing after the 24-hour window, and Instagram threads cannot be assigned to a named teammate.

Source:Instagram setup guide

How does a person take over from the automation?

A handoff step emails the team and leaves the thread, with what the person already said, in the inbox. On Instagram, a teammate's reply also takes over from the AI agent. Threads cannot be assigned to a named teammate, so agree who watches the Instagram inbox, and reply within 24 hours of the person's last message.

Is there a rule for Instagram automation in MENA?

No region-wide rule was found. MENA has no single official definition (the World Bank groups 23 economies under it), so the law of each country you message applies. Qatar's Article 22 requires prior consent for electronic direct marketing, and its regulator's guideline names social media among the channels, so treat a promotional Instagram DM to someone in Qatar as within it; the UAE and Saudi Arabia have personal data protection laws that cover what you collect in DMs. The UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar location pages set out each country.

Why do Canada and South Africa have their own Instagram pages?

South Africa's Information Regulator lists Instagram DMs as electronic direct marketing under POPIA section 69, and Canada's CASL counts instant messaging accounts as electronic addresses, so in both a commercial DM needs a consent basis and must identify the sender and offer a way to stop. That changes how a DM flow may start and what each message must carry, which is why each has its own Instagram page. Qatar's guideline also names social media among the channels for electronic direct marketing; the Qatar location page covers it. For other markets, Meta's rules decide how Instagram automation works, and the location pages set out each country's marketing and data law.

Key facts

Key facts: Instagram automation

Slide is a reasonable fit for a business whose Instagram demand arrives as comments, story replies and DMs that need a quick, structured answer: comment-to-DM with keyword rules, quick questions, email capture, an AI agent and a shared inbox are built. It is a weaker fit if you need broadcasts or messages after the 24-hour window, story-mention triggers, ice breakers or a persistent menu, thread assignment to named teammates, or click tracking on links sent in DMs. Pair it with email or WhatsApp when a conversation has to continue past the window.
