WhatsApp lead follow-up for businesses in Canada
Slide, by Synquic, lets a business in Canada follow up WhatsApp leads with approved templates, hand interested buyers to a salesperson, and time each follow-up sequence from the inquiry so that follow-ups end, or switch to asking for express consent, before CASL's 6-month implied consent runs out. Each commercial message must identify the sender and offer an unsubscribe, and the opt-out keywords that act on it start empty. Messages are priced on Meta's North America line, a +1 business number cannot place WhatsApp calls, and Slide bills in US dollars.

The buyer and the problem
Sales teams at Canadian businesses (home services, education, automotive, professional services) that receive inquiries on WhatsApp from ads, a website chat button or a QR code, and follow up over weeks or months.
A lead who asked a question in January may still be worth a message in August, but by then the implied consent from that inquiry has lapsed under CASL. When follow-ups are sent by hand, nothing tells the salesperson which inquiries are past the line, and an unsubscribe typed into a chat is easy to miss. The follow-up needs a clock and an off switch built in.
Supported capabilities, mapped to the product
The consent basis on every contact
The intake flow writes its answers, including the consent basis, to contact fields, and the conversation's own timestamp shows when the person first got in touch, so every later message can be traced back to when and why.
A follow-up sequence with a fixed end
Delays space the follow-up templates from the moment of the inquiry, conditions branch on answers, and a wait-until step holds a message for a fixed date and time. Build the sequence so its last commercial message goes out well before six months.
An express-consent request as the last step
The final template asks whether the person wants to keep hearing from you, with "Yes" and "No thanks" buttons. A yes is stored as the contact's express-consent answer and moves them into the segment future campaigns use. Have your adviser check the request's wording against CASL's rules for seeking express consent.
Unsubscribes that block the contact
When a reply matches one of your opt-out keywords, Slide blocks the contact, and blocked contacts are skipped on every channel. The keyword list starts empty, so you add STOP and its French equivalents yourself.
English and French templates
French is in Slide's template editor alongside English, so each follow-up can be approved in both and sent according to the language the lead chose.
A salesperson takes the warm leads
A handoff step puts the conversation in the shared inbox with the collected answers and emails the team. HubSpot can sync contacts both ways if your pipeline lives there.
A kitchen renovation inquiry, followed up inside the 6-month limit
A renovation company working in Ontario and Quebec runs Click-to-WhatsApp ads and a website chat button. This is one inquiry and how its follow-ups are timed.
- Trigger
An inquiry arrives from an ad
A homeowner taps a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and asks what a kitchen renovation involves. Slide records the ad as the lead source, and the message opens the 24-hour window.
- Qualification
Language, project and the consent basis
The bot asks for a language (English or Français), the type of project, the timeline and the first part of the postal code, then writes the answers and the consent basis "inquiry" to the contact. The conversation's timestamp shows the date of the inquiry.
- Human handoff
A salesperson sends the estimate
A handoff step assigns the conversation to a salesperson with the answers attached and emails the team. The salesperson replies in the chat while the window is open. When the homeowner asks to talk, the salesperson phones from an ordinary line, because a +1 business number cannot place WhatsApp calls.
- Action
Follow-ups on a schedule that ends early
The follow-up automation that started with the inquiry sends approved marketing templates two weeks and two months later, in the homeowner's language. Each names the company and ends with "Reply STOP to unsubscribe", and STOP is on the opt-out list.
- Action
At five months, ask for express consent
The last step, about five months after the inquiry, is a template asking: "May we keep sending you renovation offers on WhatsApp?" A yes is stored as the contact's express-consent answer; check with your adviser that the request's wording meets CASL's rules for seeking express consent. No answer, and the automation simply ends; the contact is in no marketing segment.
- Exception
An unsubscribe in other words
Another lead writes "please stop messaging me". That does not match a keyword, so it reaches the inbox, and the team has to record the opt-out on the contact within CASL's 10 business days so that no further commercial message reaches that lead.
- Recorded outcome
Every contact carries its consent basis
A homeowner who signs becomes a customer, which starts a new 2-year implied-consent period from the purchase. Everyone else keeps the consent basis "inquiry" and either an express-consent answer or none, so the team can see at a glance who may still receive marketing.

What you need, and the launch sequence
Requirements
- Meta business portfolio and verification
Your +1 number sits in a Meta business portfolio, and Meta verifies the business before it can send at scale. Allow several business days.
Source:Meta Business Manager guide - A number not registered on the WhatsApp apps
The number you connect cannot also be in use on the WhatsApp consumer or Business app.
Source:WhatsApp Business setup guide - Templates that identify you and offer an unsubscribe
Every follow-up after the window is a template Meta approves. Under CASL each commercial message identifies the sender and includes an unsubscribe, so write both into the template text.

The WhatsApp opt-out keyword list starts empty. Add the words leads will use in both languages before the first follow-up goes out.
- Fields for the consent basis
Create contact fields for the consent basis (inquiry, purchase or express) and the express-consent answer, so the flow can fill them in. The conversation's timestamp shows when each answer was given; where you need a date in a field, the team records it.

Launch sequence
Start Meta business verification and connect the number (setup guide).
Create the consent fields in contacts.
Build the intake flow and the follow-up automation in the automation builder, with delays that end before six months and the express-consent request as the last step.
Write each follow-up in English and French, name the business, include the unsubscribe line, and submit for Meta approval.
Add opt-out keywords in both languages, and name who checks the inbox for unsubscribes written in other words.
Point future campaigns only at contacts with express consent or a purchase in the last two years; a segment on a purchase-date field compares with a fixed date, so move its cut-off forward before each send. Then go live.
What is specific to Canada
CASL covers commercial WhatsApp messages
Section 6 of CASL requires consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe in every commercial electronic message, and the Act's "electronic address" includes instant messaging and telephone accounts as well as email.
Source:Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (S.C. 2010, c. 23) (opens in a new tab)Implied consent has an end date
An inquiry gives implied consent for 6 months; a purchase or contract gives it for 2 years. After that, express consent is needed. Slide does not calculate these periods for you, which is why the consent basis belongs on the contact and the follow-up sequence, timed from the inquiry, should end before the limit.
Source:Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation, s.10(10) (opens in a new tab)Contacts guideUnsubscribes take effect within 10 business days
CASL requires an unsubscribe request to be given effect within 10 business days. Keyword replies are acted on by Slide once you have added the keywords; a request in other words needs a person to act on it in time.
Source:Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (S.C. 2010, c. 23) (opens in a new tab)No business-initiated WhatsApp calls from +1 numbers
Meta lists Canadian business numbers among those that cannot place business-initiated WhatsApp calls. Customers can still call the business, but a salesperson who wants to talk has to use an ordinary phone line.
Source:Meta: WhatsApp Business Calling (opens in a new tab)French for Quebec, and Law 25 for Quebec data
Quebec's Charter of the French language gives consumers the right to be served in French, though whether it reaches individual chats is not settled in official guidance; French is in Slide's template editor. Law 25 requires an assessment before Quebec residents' personal information is communicated outside Quebec, so ask the Slide team where data is hosted.

What these claims rest on
- CASL requires consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe in every commercial electronic message
Section 6: express or implied consent; identify the sender; include an unsubscribe. An "electronic address" includes email, instant messaging and telephone accounts. Section 11(3): unsubscribes take effect within 10 business days.
Official sourceChecked 11 October 2026Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (S.C. 2010, c. 23) (opens in a new tab) - Under CASL, implied consent from a business relationship lasts 2 years after a purchase and 6 months after an inquiry
An existing business relationship gives implied consent for two years from a purchase or contract and six months from an inquiry or application. After that, express consent is needed.
- Business-initiated WhatsApp calls are unavailable for business numbers in some countries
Meta lists countries where a business number cannot place calls: Nigerian, Egyptian, Canadian and US business numbers are on it; Kenyan and South African numbers are not. Customers can still call the business where the Cloud API is available. Calling needs a messaging limit of at least 2,000.
- Canada is priced in Meta's "North America" group with the United States
Canada (+1) shares the North America line. Utility and authentication rates for this market were lowered on 1 January 2026. There is no CAD rate card.
- WhatsApp leads can come from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, QR codes and links, website chat, WhatsApp forms and Meta or Google lead forms
Ad referrals are captured with their source, QR codes and links start a flow, native WhatsApp forms collect fields, and lead-form submissions trigger automations.
How the cost is made up
A workspace created with a Canadian number is billed in US dollars; there is no CAD billing. Plans and current prices are on the pricing page, and paid plans start with a 14-day trial. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.
Meta prices messages to Canadian numbers on its North America line, shared with the United States, and publishes no CAD rate card; utility and authentication rates for this market were lowered on 1 January 2026. Each follow-up template is charged when delivered, by category. Replies inside the window are service messages, charged since 1 October 2026 after 1,000 free each month per business number, and a lead from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad is free for 72 hours if you reply within 24 hours.
Because the sequence for each lead ends before six months, cost per lead is bounded: the number of inquiries, the follow-ups in the sequence and the share who give express consent and join later campaigns set the total. The exact per-message price for your account is shown in the wallet.
When this fits, and what it does not do
A good fit when
- Considered purchases with a long decision, where follow-ups run for weeks or months.
- Leads from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, a website chat button or QR codes.
- Teams willing to record the consent basis on every contact and time follow-ups from the inquiry.
Needs a person when
- Estimates, site visits and anything the lead wants to discuss by phone.
- Unsubscribe requests written in the lead's own words.
- Any lead whose consent basis is unclear, before a commercial message goes out.
Not established by this page
- Any increase in conversion rate: Slide publishes no measured outcomes for this workflow.
- Automatic calculation of CASL consent expiry: Slide does not record consent dates or compute consent periods for you.
- Where customer data is hosted. Ask the Slide team before you sign.
Direct answers
How do Canadian businesses use Slide to follow up WhatsApp leads?
They capture each inquiry with its source, let a salesperson take the conversation while it is warm, and run a follow-up sequence of approved templates that ends before the inquiry's implied consent runs out. The last step asks for express consent, and only those who say yes stay in future campaigns.
Source:Meta Ads guideAutomation builder guideAutomation builder guideCanada's Anti-Spam Legislation, s.10(10) (opens in a new tab)Does CASL apply to WhatsApp follow-ups?
CASL's definition of an electronic address includes instant messaging and telephone accounts, so a commercial message sent over WhatsApp falls within its rules. Section 6 requires express or implied consent, identification of the sender and an unsubscribe in each commercial electronic message. Take advice on how your own messages are classified.
Source:Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (S.C. 2010, c. 23) (opens in a new tab)How long can we keep following up an inquiry?
Implied consent from an inquiry lasts 6 months; from a purchase or contract, 2 years. After that you need express consent. Slide does not compute these periods, so record the consent basis on the contact, time the follow-up sequence from the inquiry to finish before six months, and make its last message a request for express consent while implied consent still applies.
Source:Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation, s.10(10) (opens in a new tab)Contacts guideAutomation builder guideHow do unsubscribes work on WhatsApp in Slide?
Add the words people will use, in English and French, to the opt-out keyword list, which starts empty. A reply matching one of them blocks the contact, and blocked contacts are skipped on every channel. An unsubscribe written in other words reaches the inbox and needs a person to act on it within CASL's 10 business days.
Source:Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (S.C. 2010, c. 23) (opens in a new tab)Can we call leads on WhatsApp from our Canadian number?
No. Meta does not allow business-initiated WhatsApp calls from Canadian (+1) business numbers, though customers can call the business. When a lead wants to talk, hand the chat to a salesperson who phones from an ordinary line.
Source:Meta: WhatsApp Business Calling (opens in a new tab)Automation builder guideDo we need French templates for leads in Quebec?
Quebec's Charter of the French language gives consumers the right to be served in French; whether that reaches individual WhatsApp messages is not settled in official guidance. French is in Slide's template editor, so ask for a language preference at the start and send each lead the matching version. The AI agent replies in French only if its instructions say so, and the dashboard is in English.
Source:OQLF: Language of commerce and business (opens in a new tab)Automation builder guideWhat do we need from Meta to start, and how long does it take?
A Meta business portfolio, business verification (allow several business days), a number not registered on the WhatsApp apps and a display name. Each template is approved by Meta, not by Slide. Synquic says it can migrate contacts and have a first automation live within one business day, outside those approvals.
Source:WhatsApp Business setup guideMeta Business Manager guideWhatsApp Business setup guideDoes it connect to our CRM?
HubSpot is built, with two-way contact sync, an event trigger and actions. Google Sheets, Meta lead ads, Cal.com, outbound webhooks and the public API are also available. Salesforce and Zoho are not built.
Source:Integrations guideAPI referenceWhat does it cost to run WhatsApp follow-ups in Canada?
The Slide plan is billed in US dollars. Meta's per-message charges come from your wallet: follow-up templates to Canadian numbers are charged on the North America line by category, and replies inside the window have been charged since 1 October 2026 after 1,000 free each month per number. A sequence that ends before six months keeps the cost per lead bounded.

How many inquiries convert within the sequence, how many leads give express consent at the five-month step, delivery and read rates for each follow-up, unsubscribes by keyword and in other words, and how quickly the latter were acted on. Slide reports WhatsApp sent, delivered, read, failed and cost, and logs every automation run.
Source:Campaigns guideWhy might Slide fit a Canadian sales team, and what should we compare?
Slide lets you store the consent basis on each contact, run a bounded follow-up sequence timed from the inquiry, ask for express consent in the chat and block contacts who unsubscribe by keyword, in English and French. Compare platforms on whether they calculate consent expiry (Slide does not), how they handle unsubscribes written in free text, CRM integrations, data hosting under PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25, and which certifications are complete; Slide's SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001 are in progress.

Slide is a reasonable fit for a Canadian business that follows up WhatsApp inquiries over weeks and is prepared to design the sequence around CASL: the consent basis on the contact, a follow-up series that ends before six months, an express-consent request, keyword unsubscribes that block the contact, and French templates are all built. It is a weaker fit if you want the platform to calculate consent expiry for you, if your sales process depends on calling leads over WhatsApp, or if you need billing in Canadian dollars.
