WhatsApp automation for businesses in Canada

Slide, by Synquic, lets a business in Canada run WhatsApp support, order updates and follow-up in English and French from one number, with a shared inbox for the team. CASL applies to commercial messages sent over WhatsApp: each needs consent, must identify you and must carry an unsubscribe that takes effect within 10 business days. Canadian numbers are priced on Meta's North America line with the United States, a Canadian business number cannot place WhatsApp calls, and Slide bills the workspace in US dollars.

Who it is for

The buyer and the problem

Retailers, service businesses and their support teams in Canada, including those with customers in Quebec, that want WhatsApp conversations in English and French handled from one number, with consent tracked on each contact.

A customer in Quebec may expect to be served in French, implied consent under CASL lapses months after an inquiry, and an unsubscribe has to take effect within 10 business days. Done by hand on one phone, language preferences live in people's heads and consent dates in a spreadsheet nobody updates.

What Slide does

Supported capabilities, mapped to the product

  • English and French in the same flow

French is one of the 25 languages in Slide's template editor, so each template can have an English and a French version. A language question at the start of a flow branches the rest of the conversation and writes the choice to the contact, where a tag or segment carries it into later campaigns.

  • An AI agent instructed to answer in French

An AI agent answers from your knowledge base and can look up orders in a connected Shopify store. It replies in French when its instructions tell it to, for example whenever the customer has chosen French; it does not switch languages on its own.

  • Unsubscribes that take effect when they arrive

Once you add opt-out keywords such as STOP and ARRÊT, a contact who sends one is blocked and skipped on every channel from that message on, well inside CASL's 10 business days. The keyword list starts empty.

  • Consent type kept on the contact

Fields and tags on each contact can record whether consent was express or implied from a purchase or an inquiry, and where it came from, so campaign segments are built from it. Track when implied consent runs out yourself.

  • Order updates from Shopify

Order confirmation, shipped, out for delivery and delivered events from a connected Shopify store send approved utility templates. "Delivered" reflects a successful fulfilment in Shopify, not a carrier's confirmation.

  • A shared inbox with handoff

Conversations the bot or agent cannot settle land in the shared inbox with the collected answers, ready to assign to a teammate who speaks the customer's language; the team is emailed at the handoff.

Example workflow, illustrative

A delivery question from a Quebec customer, answered in French

An online home-goods store in Montreal sells across the country on Shopify. This is how one French-speaking customer's question moves through its WhatsApp number. Following up new leads is covered on WhatsApp sales conversion in Canada.

  1. Trigger

The customer writes from the order email

A customer taps the WhatsApp link in her order confirmation email and writes "Bonjour, où est ma commande?". The link starts the store's support flow.

  2. Customer interaction

    Language first

The bot asks "English or Français?" with two buttons. She taps Français, and the choice is written to the language field on her contact.

  3. Action

    The agent answers in French

The French branch hands the question to the AI agent, whose instructions say to answer in French. It finds her order in the connected Shopify store and replies with its status.

  4. Exception

She asks the store to call her

She writes "Pouvez-vous m'appeler?". A Canadian business number cannot start a WhatsApp call, so the bot explains in French that she can call the store from this chat, or that a teammate will reply here.

  5. Human handoff

    A French-speaking teammate takes over

The parcel is late and she wants a refund. A handoff step puts the conversation in the inbox with her order and her language field, the team is emailed, and the conversation is assigned to a teammate who works in French.

  6. Recorded outcome

    Her preferences are on record

Her contact keeps the language choice, the conversation and a refund tag, and the store adds French speakers to a French segment so campaigns use the French version of each template. Marketing to her follows her consent basis: her purchase gives implied consent for 2 years under CASL, and express consent is needed after that.

Setup

What you need, and the launch sequence

Requirements

  • Meta business verification and a number off the apps

Meta verifies the business portfolio before the account sends at scale, which takes several business days, and the number you connect must not be registered on the WhatsApp consumer or Business app.

  • Paired English and French templates

If you serve Quebec, submit each template in both languages. Meta reviews every version; Slide submits them from its editor.

  • A record of consent type and source

Decide which fields or tags show whether a contact gave express consent or has implied consent from a purchase or an inquiry, and where it came from. CASL's implied consent lasts 2 years after a purchase and 6 months after an inquiry.

  • Opt-out keywords in both languages

Add STOP, ARRÊT and any other word your templates mention. The list starts empty in Slide.

  • An answer on where data is held

Quebec's Law 25 calls for an assessment before personal information leaves Quebec. Ask the Slide team where your data is hosted before you sign, so the assessment has the facts it needs.

Launch sequence

  1. Confirm the payment method for a US dollar workspace with the Slide team, and ask where customer data is hosted.

  2. Start Meta business verification, connect the number (setup guide) and connect Shopify (Shopify guide).

  3. Write each utility and marketing template in English and French, with your business name and an unsubscribe instruction in the marketing ones.

  4. Put the language question at the start of each flow, give the French branch an AI agent instructed to answer in French, and end every branch in an answer or a handoff (automation builder).

  5. Add opt-out keywords in both languages and check that STOP and ARRÊT each block a test contact.

  6. Tag existing contacts by consent type before the first campaign, and leave out anyone whose implied consent has expired.

Local considerations

What is specific to Canada

This is a summary of public rules for orientation, not legal advice. Slide does not certify that any business's messaging complies with local law; check your own obligations with a qualified adviser.

Evidence

What these claims rest on

  • CASL requires consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe in every commercial electronic message

Section 6: express or implied consent; identify the sender; include an unsubscribe. An "electronic address" includes email, instant messaging and telephone accounts. Section 11(3): unsubscribes take effect within 10 business days.

  • Under CASL, implied consent from a business relationship lasts 2 years after a purchase and 6 months after an inquiry

An existing business relationship gives implied consent for two years from a purchase or contract and six months from an inquiry or application. After that, express consent is needed.

  • Quebec's Charter of the French language gives consumers the right to be served in French

Sections 5 and 50.2 give consumers the right to be informed and served in French; commercial publications and advertising must be in French. Whether this reaches individual marketing emails or chat messages is not settled in official guidance.

  • Business-initiated WhatsApp calls are unavailable for business numbers in some countries

Meta lists countries where a business number cannot place calls: Nigerian, Egyptian, Canadian and US business numbers are on it; Kenyan and South African numbers are not. Customers can still call the business where the Cloud API is available. Calling needs a messaging limit of at least 2,000.

Pricing

How the cost is made up

Slide bills a workspace created with a Canadian number in US dollars; there is no Canadian dollar option. Plans and current prices are on the pricing page, and paid plans start with a 14-day trial. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.

WhatsApp usage is charged by Meta per message on the North America line, which Canada shares with the United States; Meta lowered utility and authentication rates for this market on 1 January 2026. Since 1 October 2026 service replies inside the 24-hour window are charged too, after the first 1,000 each month per business number.

Running in two languages does not double the cost of a message, because each customer receives one version. Slide draws the charges from a prepaid wallet, separate from the plan, and stops sending when it runs out; the exact price per message for your account is shown in the wallet.

Fit and limits

When this fits, and what it does not do

A good fit when

  • Customers who write in English and in French, on one WhatsApp number.
  • A Shopify store that wants order updates and support in the same place.
  • A team that wants language and consent type recorded on every contact.

Needs a person when

  • Refunds, late deliveries and complaints.
  • Customers who want a call, since a Canadian number cannot call out on WhatsApp.
  • Any doubt about whether a contact's consent is still valid.

Not established by this page

  • Where customer data is hosted, which a Law 25 assessment needs: ask the Slide team.
  • Automatic tracking of when implied consent expires: plan to review it yourself.
  • Whether a Canadian card can pay for Slide: confirm with the Slide team.
Questions

Direct answers

Does CASL apply to WhatsApp messages?

Yes, to commercial ones. CASL's definition of an electronic address includes instant messaging and telephone accounts as well as email, so a commercial message on WhatsApp needs consent, must identify the sender and must include an unsubscribe. Unsubscribe requests must take effect within 10 business days. Check with your adviser which of your messages count as commercial.

How long does implied consent last for WhatsApp follow-up?

Under CASL, an existing business relationship gives implied consent for 2 years after a purchase or contract and 6 months after an inquiry or application. After that you need express consent to keep sending commercial messages. Record the consent type on each contact and review it before every campaign; WhatsApp sales conversion in Canada covers the inquiry case.

Can we call customers on WhatsApp from a Canadian number?

No. Meta lists Canadian (+1) business numbers among those that cannot start a WhatsApp call, whichever platform you use. Customers can still call your business on WhatsApp, so flows should offer that, a reply in the chat, or a call on a regular phone line.

Can Slide handle French for customers in Quebec?

For the messages, yes: French is in Slide's template editor, a bot can ask for a language and store it, and the AI agent replies in French when its instructions say to. The Slide dashboard itself is in English, so your team works in an English interface. Quebec's Charter gives consumers the right to be served in French; whether it reaches individual chat messages is not settled in official guidance.

What does Quebec's Law 25 mean for using Slide?

Law 25 requires an assessment before personal information is communicated outside Quebec, which matters when a provider outside Quebec processes your customers' data. Ask the Slide team where data is hosted before you sign; this page does not state a hosting location. PIPEDA applies to the same contact data across the country.

How quickly does an unsubscribe take effect in Slide?

When a contact sends one of your opt-out keywords, Slide blocks them and skips them on every channel from then on, inside CASL's 10-business-day limit. The keyword list is empty until you add to it, so include French words such as ARRÊT if you serve Quebec, and say in each commercial template how to unsubscribe.

What does WhatsApp cost a business in Canada?

The Slide plan is billed in US dollars (see pricing), and Meta's per-message charges on the North America line come from your Slide wallet. Meta lowered utility and authentication rates for North America on 1 January 2026, and since 1 October 2026 it charges for service replies after 1,000 free each month per number. There is no Canadian dollar rate card.

Is there an email or Instagram page for Canada?

Yes. Email automation in Canada covers CASL for email, and email retention in Canada covers the 2-year limit on purchase-based consent. Instagram automation in Canada covers DMs, where Meta lets a business reply only within 24 hours of the person's last message.

Key facts

Key facts: WhatsApp automation in Canada

Slide is a reasonable fit for a Canadian business that serves customers in English and French on WhatsApp and wants support, order updates and consented follow-up on one number, with language and consent type kept on each contact and opt-outs that apply as soon as they arrive. It is a weaker fit if you need to call customers on WhatsApp from a +1 number, a French-language dashboard, billing in Canadian dollars, or a confirmed hosting location before you start.
