WhatsApp automation for businesses in South Africa

Slide, by Synquic, lets a business in South Africa answer WhatsApp enquiries with a bot or an AI agent, hand buyers to the team, and send marketing only to people who agreed to it. POPIA section 69 shapes that last part: someone who is not yet a customer may be asked for consent once, and every marketing message must say who it is from and how to stop. Messages to +27 numbers are priced on Meta's South Africa line, and Slide bills the workspace in US dollars.

Facts on this page were last reviewed on 11 October 2026. See the key facts and sources.

Who it is for

The buyer and the problem

Retailers, property and service businesses, and their sales teams in South Africa that receive WhatsApp enquiries from people who have not bought yet, and want to turn the willing ones into a marketing list within POPIA's rules for non-customers.

An enquiry is not consent. Someone who asks about a product on WhatsApp has not agreed to receive offers, and under section 69 you get one chance to ask. If that question is asked badly, asked twice, or its answer is never written down, the business either loses the lead or markets to someone it should not.

What Slide does

Supported capabilities, mapped to the product

  • Entry points that start the right flow

QR codes and links open a chosen flow, a chat button on your website starts a conversation, and Click-to-WhatsApp ad referrals are stored with their source, so each enquiry shows where it began.

  • Answers first, from a bot or an AI agent

A menu bot handles the predictable questions, and an AI agent answers from your knowledge base, including product and order lookups in a connected Shopify store. AI steps depend on your plan.

  • One consent question, recorded on the contact

A button question writes the person's answer to a contact field, and the flow adds a tag showing the request was made. Excluding that tag keeps anyone already asked out of any campaign; whether an inbound flow can skip the question for a contact already asked is not verified, so test it before launch.

  • Marketing segments built from the answer

Campaigns go to segments, so a segment of contacts whose consent field says yes is the only audience a marketing template reaches. Unsubscribed and blocked contacts are skipped on every send.

  • A stop that holds everywhere

Once you add opt-out keywords, a contact who sends one is blocked and skipped on every channel, which is how the "how to stop" line in each message is honoured. The list is empty until you add words to it.

  • Handoff to sales with the answers attached

When a buyer wants a quote, a sample or a visit, a handoff step leaves the conversation in the shared inbox with what was collected and emails the team.

Example workflow, illustrative

A shop-window enquiry turned into a consent record before any offer

A furniture store in Cape Town puts a QR code in its window. This is how one passer-by's question becomes either a recorded yes to marketing or a recorded no, and why the store asks only once.

  1. Trigger

A QR code opens the chat

A passer-by scans the code and asks whether the sofa in the window comes in grey. The code starts the store's enquiry flow, which tags the contact "window-qr" so the source is on record.

  2. Customer interaction

    The question is answered first

The AI agent replies from the store's product notes: two greys are available, and here is the price. The person came for an answer, so they get it before anything else is asked.

  3. Qualification

One consent question, in one place

The enquiry flow behind the window code is the only flow that asks for consent: "Would you like [your business name] to send you new arrivals and offers on WhatsApp? Reply STOP at any time to stop." The person taps Yes; the answer goes into the marketing consent field, and the flow adds the tag "consent-asked".

  4. Exception

If the answer had been no

A No would have gone into the same field, with the same tag. Section 69 allows one approach to a non-customer, so that No is final: no marketing segment includes the contact, and nobody on the team asks again. Before launch, test what someone who scans the code a second time sees, because this page has not verified that a flow can skip a question the contact already answered.

  5. Human handoff

A buyer goes to the sales team

The person asks about delivery to Stellenbosch and a fabric sample. The bot hands over: the conversation, the sofa, the consent answer and the source tag are in the inbox, and the sales team is emailed.

  6. Recorded outcome

Marketing reaches only the people who said yes

The next new-arrivals template goes to the segment whose consent field says yes. It names the business and ends with "Reply STOP to stop these messages"; STOP is in the opt-out keywords, so anyone who replies with it is blocked on every channel.

An illustration of how the workflow runs, not a customer case study. Names, numbers and messages are examples.

Setup

What you need, and the launch sequence

Requirements

  • Meta verification and a clean number

Meta has to verify the business portfolio before the number sends at scale, which takes several business days, and the number cannot remain on the WhatsApp consumer or Business app.

  • A consent field and a "consent asked" tag

Create both before you build. The field holds the answer; the tag records that the one permitted request has been made, so segments and teammates can leave that contact alone.

  • Marketing templates that identify you and say how to stop

Section 69 expects every direct marketing message to identify the sender and give a way to stop, so write both into each marketing template. Meta approves templates, and Slide's editor offers English but not Afrikaans, isiZulu or isiXhosa.

  • Opt-out keywords

Add STOP and any other word your templates mention. Slide's keyword list starts empty.

  • Knowledge for the AI agent

Product details, prices, delivery areas and policies, so enquiries are answered before consent is asked. Connect Shopify if you sell there.

Launch sequence

  1. Confirm the payment method for a US dollar workspace with the Slide team, then begin Meta business verification (Meta Business Manager guide).

  2. Connect the number (setup guide) and create a QR code or link for each place enquiries start, one per source.

  3. Sort your existing list into three groups: customers who were given a chance to object when their details were collected, people who gave consent, and everyone else, who gets no marketing until they say yes.

  4. Build the enquiry flow in this order: answer the question, ask the single consent question and tag the contact, then hand buyers to sales. Keep the consent question out of every other flow.

  5. Add opt-out keywords, submit marketing templates with your name and a stop line, and test both a Yes and a No from two phones before going live.

Local considerations

What is specific to South Africa

This is a summary of public rules for orientation, not legal advice. Slide does not certify that any business's messaging complies with local law; check your own obligations with a qualified adviser.

Evidence

What these claims rest on

  • POPIA section 69 allows electronic direct marketing only with consent, or to existing customers

A non-customer may be approached once to ask for consent. Customers may be marketed similar products if they could object at collection and in every message. Every message identifies the sender and gives a way to stop. The Regulator lists direct messaging on Instagram among electronic direct marketing.

  • WhatsApp leads can come from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, QR codes and links, website chat, WhatsApp forms and Meta or Google lead forms

Ad referrals are captured with their source, QR codes and links start a flow, native WhatsApp forms collect fields, and lead-form submissions trigger automations.

  • WhatsApp requires opt-in before a business messages someone, and opt-outs must be honoured

Businesses may contact people only after receiving opt-in permission and must respect all requests, on or off WhatsApp, to block or opt out. The opt-in must name the business.

Pricing

How the cost is made up

The Slide plan for a workspace created with a South African number is billed in US dollars, the currency Slide uses everywhere outside India. See the pricing page for plans and current prices; paid plans start with a 14-day trial. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.

Meta charges WhatsApp usage per message on its South Africa line. Answering an enquiry inside the 24-hour window is a service message, charged since 1 October 2026 after the first 1,000 each month per business number, while a conversation that began from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad is free for 72 hours when you reply within 24 hours. Each marketing template sent to the consented segment is charged at the marketing rate.

Slide takes these charges from a prepaid wallet, separate from the plan, and stops sending when the wallet is empty. The per-message prices for your account are listed in the wallet.

Fit and limits

When this fits, and what it does not do

A good fit when

  • Enquiries that start on WhatsApp from QR codes, links, ads or your website.
  • A marketing list built only from people who said yes, with the answer on each contact.
  • A sales team that takes over once a buyer is ready to talk.

Needs a person when

  • Quotes, negotiations and anything a buyer wants to discuss before paying.
  • A person who asks how you got their number, or disputes that they agreed.
  • Questions the AI agent cannot answer from your knowledge base.

Not established by this page

  • Templates in Afrikaans, isiZulu or isiXhosa: not in Slide's editor today.
  • Whether a South African card can pay for Slide: confirm with the Slide team.
  • Where customer data is hosted. Ask the Slide team before you sign.
  • Whether a flow can skip the consent question for a contact already asked: test it before launch.
Questions

Direct answers

Can we send WhatsApp offers to people who enquired but have not bought?

Only with their consent. POPIA section 69 lets you approach a non-customer once to ask for consent to electronic direct marketing; after that one request you may not ask again. Meta also requires opt-in before a business messages someone first. In Slide, ask the question inside the conversation the person started, store the answer in a contact field, and build marketing segments from that field.

Can we market to existing customers without asking again?

POPIA allows marketing of your own similar products or services to existing customers, provided they had a chance to object when you collected their details and have that chance again in every message. Anything outside that exception needs consent. Keep a field or tag that shows which customers were offered the objection at collection, and include a stop line in every template.

What must each WhatsApp marketing message contain?

Section 69 requires every direct marketing message to identify the sender and give an address or other contact details through which the person can ask you to stop. On WhatsApp that can be your business name in the template and a line such as "Reply STOP to stop these messages". Add STOP to Slide's opt-out keywords so the reply blocks the contact; the list is empty by default.

Which South African languages can our templates use?

Slide's template editor offers 25 languages, including English, but not Afrikaans, isiZulu or isiXhosa, so templates go out in English. Once a customer writes to you, your team can reply in any language inside the 24-hour window, and an AI agent can do the same if its instructions say so. With 12 official languages, decide which ones your team covers in the inbox.

Can we call customers on WhatsApp from a South African number?

Meta does not list South African business numbers among those that cannot start WhatsApp calls, so calling is open to a number whose messaging limit is at least 2,000. Customers can also call the business on WhatsApp. Check your number's messaging limit before you design a flow that depends on calling.

What does WhatsApp cost a South African business on Slide?

Two parts: the Slide plan, billed in US dollars (see pricing), and Meta's per-message charges on the South Africa line, drawn from your Slide wallet. Marketing templates cost the marketing rate; service replies have been charged since 1 October 2026 after 1,000 free each month per number; conversations started from an ad are free for 72 hours when you reply within 24 hours. Meta has no rand rate card, and your account's exact price per message is shown in the wallet.

How do we show who agreed to marketing?

Slide keeps what your flow writes: the answer in a contact field, a tag showing the request was made, the source tag, and the conversation itself on the contact. It has no double opt-in and no contacts export, so decide in advance how you would show those records to the Information Regulator if asked. Synquic does not claim any POPIA certification.

Is there an email or Instagram page for South Africa?

Yes. Email automation in South Africa covers section 69 for email, where marketing should go through campaigns or sequences because the automation send-email step adds no unsubscribe. Instagram automation in South Africa covers DMs, which the Regulator also treats as electronic direct marketing.

Key facts

Key facts: WhatsApp automation in South Africa

Slide is a reasonable fit for a South African business that receives enquiries on WhatsApp and wants to answer them, ask once for marketing consent, and market only to the people who said yes, with the answer stored on each contact and opt-outs that block everywhere. It is a weaker fit if you need templates in Afrikaans, isiZulu or isiXhosa, an export of consent records, billing in rand, or a bot that stays paused after a person takes over.
