Instagram comment and DM automation for businesses in South Africa
Slide, by Synquic, lets a business in South Africa reply automatically when someone comments on a post, replies to a story or sends a DM on Instagram, answer the question with a flow or an AI agent, and pass the conversation to the team when it needs a person. Every flow starts from the person's own comment or message: Instagram allows replies only within 24 hours of their last message, and Slide sends no broadcast DMs. That matters in South Africa, where the Information Regulator counts Instagram direct messages as electronic direct marketing under POPIA section 69.

The buyer and the problem
Marketing and sales teams at South African brands, retailers and service businesses whose posts and stories draw questions in the comments, and who want those people answered in DMs without someone watching the account all day.
Questions about price, sizes, delivery areas and stock pile up under posts and in DMs. Answering each by hand is slow, a public reply exposes details people asked about privately, and anything that looks like an unprompted promotional DM raises a POPIA question. The automation has to answer what was asked, in the thread the person opened, and step aside when a person is needed.
Supported capabilities, mapped to the product
Comment-to-DM on the posts you choose
Pick specific posts or all of them and set keyword rules. When someone comments "PRICE", Slide can post a short public reply under the comment and send one private reply in DMs with the details. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment.
Story replies, live comments and link triggers
Replies to your stories, comments during a Live and link triggers can each start a flow, so people get the same answer wherever they reacted.
Source:Instagram setup guideQuick-reply questions and branching
A flow can ask a question with tap-to-answer options, branch on the answer and capture an email address into the contact record, so a lead is not lost when the chat goes quiet.
An AI agent for open questions
For questions a fixed flow cannot predict, an AI agent answers from a knowledge base you write: delivery areas, return terms, product details. AI steps depend on your plan, and the agent answers in a language other than English only if its instructions say so.
Source:Automation builder guideA shared inbox and a clean takeover
Instagram conversations sit in the team inbox next to WhatsApp and email. When a teammate replies, that reply takes over from the AI agent, and a handoff step also emails the team. Instagram threads cannot be assigned to a named person.
Insights and run logs
Instagram insights sit beside a step-by-step log of every automation run, so you can see which posts start conversations and where a flow stops.

A product reel that asks people to comment, handled end to end
A furniture retailer in Cape Town posts a reel of a new sofa range and asks viewers to comment "PRICE" for details. This is how one comment moves through Slide.
- Trigger
A viewer comments the keyword
A viewer comments "PRICE" under the reel. The comment-to-DM rule on that post matches the keyword, posts a short public reply ("Sent you the details in DMs") and sends the one private reply Instagram allows for that comment.
- Customer interaction
The DM delivers what was asked for
The private reply opens with the store's name, gives the price range and the delivery areas, and offers three quick replies: "Fabric options", "Delivery to my area" and "No thanks". It promotes nothing she did not ask about, and "No thanks" ends the flow with a one-line goodbye.
- Action
The AI agent takes the follow-up question
She taps "Delivery to my area", names her suburb, then asks whether the three-seater fits a narrow stairwell. The AI agent answers both from the delivery list and the dimensions in its knowledge base.
- Human handoff
A salesperson steps in
She asks for a fabric sample to be couriered, which the agent is not allowed to promise. A handoff step emails the sales team, and the first teammate to reply in the inbox takes over from the agent.
- Exception
If she had sent a photo instead
Image and voice-note DMs do not start an automation. Had she replied with a photo of her lounge, the message would have waited in the inbox for a person, so the team checks for these well inside the 24-hour window.
- Recorded outcome
What stays on record
The DM thread, her email address if she gave one, and a step-by-step log of the run stay in Slide. If she does not write again, Slide sends her nothing more: there is no broadcast and no message after the window.

What you need, and the launch sequence
Requirements
- A professional Instagram account linked to a Facebook Page
Slide connects Business or Creator accounts linked to a Facebook Page, with admin access through your Meta business portfolio. Personal accounts cannot be connected, so switch the account type first.
Source:Instagram setup guide - Posts and keywords
Decide which posts get comment-to-DM and which words trigger it. A specific keyword keeps ordinary comments from starting a private reply.
Source:Instagram setup guide - First-message wording checked against POPIA
Write the first DM so it identifies the business, delivers what the person asked for and offers a way to stop, and have whoever advises you on POPIA read it before launch.

Launch sequence
Switch the Instagram account to Business or Creator, link it to the Facebook Page, and connect it in Slide (Instagram setup guide).
List the questions your comments ask most, and decide which a fixed flow answers, which the AI agent answers, and which go to a person.
Build the comment-to-DM rule and the DM flow in the automation builder, and give every quick-reply menu a "No thanks" option that ends the flow.
Name the business in the first DM and, where the law requires it, say that the replies are automated.
Test from team members' accounts on a draft post, including a photo reply, then switch the rule on for the live post.
Agree who watches the inbox, because a person has to reply within 24 hours of the customer's last message.
What is specific to South Africa
The Information Regulator counts Instagram DMs as direct marketing
The Regulator's guidance note on direct marketing under POPIA section 69 lists direct messaging on Instagram among the forms of electronic direct marketing. A promotional DM to someone who is not your customer and has not consented is the case the section is written for.
Source:Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Consent, or an existing customer
Section 69 allows electronic direct marketing to people who have consented, or to your own customers about similar products if they could object when you collected their details and can object in every message. Someone who is neither may be approached once, to ask for consent.
Source:Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Why every Slide flow starts from the person
Instagram lets a business reply only within 24 hours of the person's last message and send one private reply per comment within 7 days, and Slide sends no broadcast or outbound DMs. Every DM Slide sends therefore responds to something the person did first: a comment, a story reply or a message. What it says is still your responsibility: answer the question, identify the business, and leave promotions out unless the person is a customer or has agreed.

If the DM collects an email address so you can send offers later, those later emails are electronic direct marketing under section 69 too. Ask in the DM whether the person wants offers, and save the answer to a contact field and tag before they join any list; the conversation's own timestamp shows when it was given.
Source:Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Contacts guideTwelve official languages
South Africa has 12 official languages. DMs are free text, so flows can be written in any of them; the AI agent replies in Afrikaans, isiZulu or another language only if its instructions tell it to. The Slide dashboard is in English.

What these claims rest on
- Instagram automations reply to DMs, comments, story replies and live comments, with keyword rules
Comment-to-DM on chosen or all posts with keyword rules, public and private replies, story-reply, live-comment and link triggers, quick-reply questions, branching, and email capture into contacts. Story mentions are not a trigger. Image and voice-note DMs do not start automations.
- Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment
One private DM per comment, sent within 7 days; further messages only if the person replies, then within 24 hours. Covers posts, reels, stories, Live and ad posts.
- POPIA section 69 allows electronic direct marketing only with consent, or to existing customers
A non-customer may be approached once to ask for consent. Customers may be marketed similar products if they could object at collection and in every message. Every message identifies the sender and gives a way to stop. The Regulator lists direct messaging on Instagram among electronic direct marketing.
Official sourceChecked 11 October 2026Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab) - An automation can hand a conversation to the team, with the collected answers on the contact
The handoff step notifies the team by email and leaves the conversation, with what was collected, in the inbox. On WhatsApp it also assigns the conversation to the teammate chosen in the step, or else to the contact's owner, or leaves it in the shared inbox. It does not pause the bot permanently: a new customer message can start an automation again, and there is no hand-back step. On Instagram, a teammate's reply takes over from the AI agent.
How the cost is made up
Instagram automation is covered by your Slide plan. Meta does not charge per message for Instagram replies the way it does for WhatsApp, so there is no usage line to forecast for DMs.
Plans and current prices are on the pricing page; paid plans start with a 14-day trial, and the AI agent depends on the plan. A workspace created with a South African phone number is billed in US dollars, because Slide bills only in rupees or dollars, so confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.
If a conversation moves on to WhatsApp, those messages are a separate cost: Meta charges them per message on its South Africa rate line, and Slide draws them from a prepaid wallet.
When this fits, and what it does not do
A good fit when
- Posts and stories that regularly draw the same questions in the comments.
- Campaigns that ask people to comment or reply to a story to get information.
- A team that can answer the inbox within 24 hours of a customer's last message.
Needs a person when
- Complaints, returns and anything that needs a judgement call.
- DMs that arrive as photos or voice notes, which do not start automations.
- Quotes and custom orders beyond what the knowledge base covers.
Not established by this page
- Whether a particular DM counts as direct marketing under POPIA: Slide cannot decide that for you.
- Any change in sales or response time: Slide publishes no measured outcomes for Instagram flows.

- Clicks on links sent in DMs, which Slide does not count.
Direct answers
Can Slide send promotional DMs to our Instagram followers in South Africa?
No. Slide has no broadcast or outbound DMs, and Instagram lets a business message someone only within 24 hours of that person's last message, or once privately in reply to a comment within 7 days. Under POPIA section 69 the Information Regulator treats Instagram DMs as electronic direct marketing, and unsolicited promotion to people who are neither customers nor consenting is the case it targets.
Source:Meta: Instagram Messaging API (opens in a new tab)Meta: Private replies (opens in a new tab)Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Is a comment-to-DM reply direct marketing under POPIA?
It depends on what the DM says, and that is a question for your adviser rather than for software. A reply that delivers the information the person asked for in their comment is different from a DM that pushes unrelated offers. Keep the private reply to what was requested, name the business, give a way to stop, and add promotions only for customers or people who have agreed to them.
Source:Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)Meta: Private replies (opens in a new tab)What do we need to connect our Instagram account?
An Instagram Business or Creator account linked to a Facebook Page, with admin access through your Meta business portfolio. Personal accounts cannot be connected. After that, setup is mostly choosing posts and keywords, writing the replies, and testing them from team members' accounts.
Source:Instagram setup guideInstagram setup guideHow does a person take over from the bot?
A teammate replies in Slide's inbox, and that reply takes over from the AI agent; a handoff step can also email the team with what the customer said. Two limits apply. Instagram threads cannot be assigned to a named teammate, and the reply has to go out within 24 hours of the customer's last message, because Slide does not use Meta's human-agent tag, which allows a person up to 7 days.
Source:Automation builder guideMeta: Instagram Platform overview (opens in a new tab)Can flows reply in Afrikaans, isiZulu or other South African languages?
Yes, as far as the text goes. DMs and quick replies are whatever you write, so you can build a flow per language or offer a language choice first. The AI agent replies in a given language only if its instructions say so; it does not switch on its own. The dashboard your team uses is in English.
Source:SAnews: Sign language becomes the 12th official language (opens in a new tab)Automation builder guideWhat does Instagram automation cost a South African business?
The Slide plan is the cost to plan for; Instagram DMs draw no per-message charge from the Slide wallet. A workspace created with a South African number is billed in US dollars, plans and prices are on the pricing page, and paid plans start with a 14-day trial. AI agent steps depend on the plan, and you should confirm the payment method with the Slide team before subscribing.
Source:Slide pricingBilling and wallet guideSlide pricingAutomation builder guideCan we move people from Instagram to WhatsApp?
Yes. A DM can offer a route into WhatsApp for a longer conversation, the pattern in the published Newport case study. Once there, WhatsApp's own rules apply, including opt-in before you message someone first, and section 69 covers WhatsApp marketing as well. See WhatsApp automation in South Africa.
Source:WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy (opens in a new tab)Information Regulator: Guidance note on direct marketing (opens in a new tab)What should we compare when choosing a tool for Instagram DMs?
Ask every vendor the same questions: does it send broadcast or out-of-window DMs (Slide does neither), how a teammate takes over from the bot, whether photo and voice replies start flows (in Slide they do not), which triggers it supports beyond comments, and where data is hosted. Also ask which security certifications are complete; Slide's SOC 2 Type II audit and ISO/IEC 27001 certification are in progress.

Slide fits a South African business that wants comment and DM questions answered quickly from its own posts, with a team inbox behind the automation and flows that only ever reply to people who wrote first. It is a weaker fit if you want to broadcast DMs to followers, message people days later, assign Instagram threads to named teammates, or automate replies to photos and voice notes; none of those is built.
