WhatsApp automation for businesses in Nigeria

Slide, by Synquic, lets a business in Nigeria run order updates, customer support and marketing on its WhatsApp number, with a shared inbox for the team. Two local rules shape the setup: GAID 2025 requires consent before any direct marketing and a record of that consent, and a +234 business number cannot place WhatsApp calls, although customers can call it. Messages are priced on Meta's Nigeria rate line, and Slide bills the workspace in US dollars.

Who it is for

The buyer and the problem

Online stores, service businesses and their support teams in Nigeria that already talk to customers on WhatsApp and want order messages, replies and promotions to run from one number, with a record of who agreed to what.

When order updates, questions and promotions all run from one phone, nobody can show which customers agreed to marketing, or when. Under GAID 2025 that record is now required, and an objection under the Data Protection Act has to stop marketing for good. A WhatsApp callback is also not possible from a Nigerian business number, so "we will call you" needs a different design.

What Slide does

Supported capabilities, mapped to the product

  • Order messages from your Shopify store

Order confirmation, cash on delivery, shipped, out for delivery and delivered events send approved utility templates without anyone pressing send. "Delivered" means Shopify recorded the fulfilment as successful, not that a courier confirmed the drop-off.

  • A marketing consent field written by the customer's tap

A button question such as "Would you like offers on WhatsApp?" writes the answer to a contact field, and the flow adds a tag naming where it was asked. Marketing segments are then built from that field, so a campaign reaches only the people who said yes.

  • Opt-outs that block a contact on every channel

When a contact sends one of your opt-out keywords, Slide blocks them and leaves them out of every later send, on WhatsApp and every other channel. The keyword list is empty at the start, so adding words such as STOP is part of setup.

  • A shared inbox, and a plan for people who want to talk

The team works every WhatsApp conversation from one inbox with assignment and notes. Customers can still call your number on WhatsApp, but the business cannot call them from a +234 number, so flows offer a chat reply or a call on another line instead.

  • Support bots and an AI agent

Menu bots handle the predictable questions, and an AI agent answers from your knowledge base and looks up orders in a connected Shopify store. AI steps depend on the plan; a handoff step passes everything else to the team with the answers attached.

  • Campaigns to consented segments

Approved marketing templates go to a tag or segment on a schedule, with delayed follow-ups, and blocked or unsubscribed contacts are skipped. Each campaign reports sent, delivered, read and failed messages with their cost.

Example workflow, illustrative

A pay-on-delivery order confirmed on WhatsApp, with consent asked separately

A Shopify store in Lagos offers payment on delivery. This is how one order moves through its WhatsApp number, and how the store keeps order messages apart from marketing.

  1. Trigger

The order sends a confirmation request

A customer orders and chooses to pay on delivery. The Shopify cash on delivery event sends an approved utility template with the order summary and two buttons: Confirm order and Cancel.

  2. Customer interaction

    The customer confirms

The customer taps Confirm, and Slide tags the contact "cod-confirmed". The reply does not change the order in Shopify, so the dispatch team works from that tag rather than from the order status.

  3. Qualification

    One separate question about marketing

With the 24-hour window now open, the bot asks a single, separate question: "Would you like offers and new arrivals on WhatsApp? Reply STOP at any time to stop." The answer goes into the marketing consent field, with a tag recording that it came from the order flow. Saying no changes nothing about the order.

  4. Human handoff

A change of address goes to a person

The customer then asks to deliver to a different address. The bot hands the conversation over: the order number and the new address are already in the inbox, the team is emailed, and a teammate updates the order in Shopify by hand.

  5. Exception

The customer asks for a call

The customer writes "please call me". A +234 business number cannot start a WhatsApp call, so the bot says they can call the store's WhatsApp number from this chat, or that the team will reply here. The Nigeria customer service workflow designs support around that limit.

  6. Recorded outcome

Order messages and marketing stay apart

Shipped, out for delivery and delivered updates follow as utility templates. The contact now carries the order tag, the consent answer and where it was given; only contacts whose field says yes enter marketing segments, and anyone who later replies STOP is blocked on every channel.

An illustration of how the workflow runs, not a customer case study. Names, numbers and messages are examples.

Setup

What you need, and the launch sequence

Requirements

  • Business verification with Meta

The number has to sit in a Meta business portfolio, and Meta must verify the business before the account sends at scale. Verification takes several business days, so run it while you design the flows.

  • A number you can move off the WhatsApp apps

The number cannot stay registered on the WhatsApp consumer or Business app. If your shop number is on the Business app now, that account must be deleted before it connects, so plan the switch.

  • A utility template per order event, and a marketing template

Each Shopify event you switch on needs its own approved template, and marketing needs a separate one. Slide submits them and Meta approves them.

    Source:WhatsApp Business setup guideShopify guide
  • A consent field and opt-out keywords

Create the marketing consent field before launch, and add the opt-out keywords you will print in messages. Slide has no double opt-in and no contacts export, so decide now how you would show your consent records if asked.

    Source:Contacts guideAutomation builder guide
  • A confirmed way to pay

Workspaces outside India are billed in US dollars. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe, and keep the wallet funded so order messages do not stop.

Launch sequence

  1. Sign up, then confirm with the Slide team how you will pay a US dollar subscription and wallet before choosing a plan on the pricing page.

  2. Start Meta business verification, connect the number (setup guide) and connect your store (Shopify guide).

  3. Write the confirmation, shipping and delivery templates in English, plus one marketing template that names your business and says how to stop.

  4. Create the consent field, add opt-out keywords such as STOP and UNSUBSCRIBE, and make sure every branch ends in an answer or a handoff.

  5. Decide what the bot says when someone asks for a call, since the number cannot call out on WhatsApp.

  6. Place a test order from a teammate's phone and follow it to delivery before switching the events on for customers.

Local considerations

What is specific to Nigeria

  • GAID 2025: consent before any direct marketing, and a record of it

Article 18(1)(a) of the GAID 2025 requires consent for any direct marketing activity, and Article 17 requires that consent to be recorded and its withdrawal to be as easy as giving it. Slide has no double opt-in and no contacts export, so keep the record in a contact field written by the button the customer tapped, and let a one-word reply withdraw it.

Source:NDPC: GAID 2025 (opens in a new tab)Automation builder guideContacts guide
  • Anyone may object to direct marketing at any time

Section 36 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 lets a person object to direct marketing at any time, after which their data may no longer be processed for it. In Slide an opt-out keyword blocks the contact on every channel, but only once you have added the keywords.

  • A +234 number cannot start a WhatsApp call

Meta lists Nigerian business numbers among those that cannot place WhatsApp calls. Customers can still call the business, so build callbacks around that: invite the customer to call, answer in the chat, or phone them on an ordinary line.

Source:Meta: WhatsApp Business Calling (opens in a new tab)
  • A Nigeria rate line, but no naira rate card

Messages to +234 numbers are priced on Meta's Nigeria line. Meta publishes rate cards in 16 currencies and the naira is not one of them, and Slide bills workspaces outside India in US dollars, so budget WhatsApp costs in dollars.

  • Templates in English; Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba in the chat

Section 55 of the constitution makes English the language of the National Assembly, with Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba once arrangements are made. Slide's template editor has English but none of those three, so templates go out in English, while your team can reply in any language inside the 24-hour window.

Evidence

What these claims rest on

  • Nigeria's GAID 2025 requires consent for direct marketing and records of that consent

Article 18(1)(a): consent is required for any direct marketing activity. Article 17(6)-(7): consent must be recorded, and withdrawing it must be as easy as giving it.

  • Nigeria's Data Protection Act 2023 covers contact data, enforced by the NDPC

Act No. 37 of 2023. Section 36(3)-(4): a person may object to direct marketing at any time, and their data must then no longer be processed for it.

Official sourceChecked 11 October 2026Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (opens in a new tab)
  • Business-initiated WhatsApp calls are unavailable for business numbers in some countries

Meta lists countries where a business number cannot place calls: Nigerian, Egyptian, Canadian and US business numbers are on it; Kenyan and South African numbers are not. Customers can still call the business where the Cloud API is available. Calling needs a messaging limit of at least 2,000.

  • Shopify events trigger WhatsApp and email automations, including abandoned checkout and order updates

About 20 store events: abandoned checkout and cart, order confirmation, cash on delivery, shipped, out for delivery, delivered (fulfilment succeeded), review request, win-back, reorder, back in stock and price drop. Shopify is the only supported store platform; the cart trigger needs the storefront embed. A cash-on-delivery confirm or cancel reply does not update the Shopify order.

Pricing

How the cost is made up

A workspace created with a Nigerian number is billed in US dollars, the only currency Slide offers outside India. Plans and current prices are on the pricing page, paid plans start with a 14-day trial, and the payment method should be confirmed with the Slide team before you subscribe.

WhatsApp usage is a separate charge. Meta prices each message on its Nigeria line by category: utility for order updates, marketing for promotions. Since 1 October 2026 replies inside the 24-hour window are charged at the utility rate after the first 1,000 service messages each month per business number, and utility templates sent inside the window are charged too.

Slide takes these charges from a prepaid wallet and stops sending when the balance runs out, which for an order flow means a missed confirmation. Your account's exact per-message prices are listed in the wallet.

Fit and limits

When this fits, and what it does not do

A good fit when

  • A Shopify store that wants order confirmations and delivery updates on WhatsApp.
  • A team sharing one WhatsApp number that needs a record of who agreed to marketing.
  • Support that runs mainly by chat, with calls started by the customer.

Needs a person when

  • Address changes, cancellations and refunds, which have to be made in Shopify by hand.
  • Customers who want a callback, since the business number cannot call out on WhatsApp.
  • Complaints, and anything the bot cannot classify.

Not established by this page

  • Whether a Nigerian card or bank transfer can pay for Slide: confirm with the Slide team.
  • Where customer data is hosted. Ask the Slide team before you sign.
  • Any change in delivery success or sales: Slide publishes no measured outcomes for these workflows.
Questions

Direct answers

Can we call customers on WhatsApp from a Nigerian business number?

No. Meta lists Nigerian (+234) business numbers among those that cannot start a WhatsApp call, whichever platform you use. Customers can still call your business number on WhatsApp, so a support flow should invite them to call, answer in the chat, or arrange a call on a regular phone line. The WhatsApp customer service page for Nigeria walks through that design.

What does GAID 2025 require before we send WhatsApp promotions?

Article 18 requires consent for any direct marketing, and Article 17 requires you to record that consent and to make withdrawing it as easy as giving it. For WhatsApp that means asking plainly, keeping the answer on the contact, and honouring a one-word opt-out. Meta separately requires opt-in before a business messages someone first. Slide supports the mechanics, a consent field written by a button and opt-out keywords that block the contact, but it has no double opt-in, so the wording and the record-keeping are yours.

Can we be billed in naira?

No. Slide bills workspaces created outside India in US dollars, and Meta has no naira rate card for WhatsApp; messages to Nigerian numbers are priced on Meta's Nigeria line. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe. Plans and current prices are on the pricing page.

Can our templates be written in Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba?

Not in Slide's template editor today: it offers 25 languages, including English, but not Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba. Once a customer writes to you, your team can reply in any language inside the 24-hour window, and an AI agent can answer in the customer's language if its instructions say so. Order updates and promotions, which are templates, go out in English.

Does a confirm or cancel reply update the order in Shopify?

No. A cash on delivery template can ask the customer to confirm or cancel, and Slide records the reply on the contact, but the Shopify order is not changed. Tag confirmed and cancelled orders, and route cancellations to a handoff so a teammate acts on them in Shopify. If you also want abandoned cart messages, the cart trigger needs Slide's storefront embed.

How do we stop marketing to someone who objects?

Add opt-out keywords in Slide, such as STOP, and print the instruction in every marketing template. When a contact sends one, Slide blocks them and skips them on every channel from then on. That is one way to act on an objection under section 36 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act; an objection in other words, or by phone or email, needs a teammate to block the contact. The keyword list starts empty, so none of this happens until you set it up.

What do we need before going live, and how long does it take?

A Meta business portfolio, Meta business verification (several business days), a number not registered on the WhatsApp apps, a display name, and approved templates for each order event and for marketing. Synquic says it migrates contacts free and can have a first automation live within one business day of onboarding; Meta's verification and template approvals sit outside that timing.

What should we ask any WhatsApp platform before choosing one for Nigeria?

Ask how it records marketing consent and whether those records can be exported, whether opt-out keywords are set up for you, how callbacks work given that +234 numbers cannot call out on WhatsApp, which currency it bills in and which payment methods it accepts, and where data is hosted. For Slide: consent lives in a contact field, there is no contacts export, opt-out keywords are yours to add, billing is in US dollars, and hosting is a question to put to the Slide team.

Key facts

Key facts: WhatsApp automation in Nigeria

Slide is a reasonable fit for a business in Nigeria that sells through Shopify or handles support on WhatsApp and wants order updates, a shared inbox and consented promotions on one number, with the consent answer kept on each contact. It is a weaker fit if you need to call customers on WhatsApp from a +234 number, templates in Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba, billing in naira, or an export of consent records for an audit.
