WhatsApp automation for businesses in Kenya

Slide, by Synquic, lets a business in Kenya send WhatsApp reorder reminders and campaigns to customers who agreed to them, and pass replies that need judgement to a person in a shared inbox. Kenya's Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 require a free, prominent way to stop in every marketing message, so each marketing template carries a one-word opt-out, and Slide blocks anyone who uses it once the keyword is added. Kenyan numbers are priced on Meta's Rest of Africa line, and Slide bills the workspace in US dollars.

Who it is for

The buyer and the problem

Shops, refill and repeat-purchase businesses, and service companies in Kenya that message existing customers on WhatsApp and want reminders and offers to go out on schedule without losing track of who asked to stop.

Repeat business depends on reaching past customers at the right moment, and every marketing message to them must now carry a free, prominent way to stop. Opt-outs that arrive as replies on a shared phone are easy to miss, and a missed one means the next campaign reaches someone who asked not to hear from you. Replies to a campaign can come in Swahili or English, and someone has to answer them.

What Slide does

Supported capabilities, mapped to the product

  • Reorder and win-back triggers from Shopify

A connected Shopify store fires reorder, win-back, back in stock and price drop events that can start a WhatsApp message to the customer concerned; put a condition on the marketing consent field before the send step, because an event-triggered message is not limited to a consented segment the way a campaign is. Order confirmation and delivery updates run from the same connection.

  • Campaigns that leave out anyone who opted out

Approved marketing templates go to a tag or segment on a schedule, with delayed follow-ups. Unsubscribed and blocked contacts are dropped from every send automatically, so an opt-out recorded today still holds for next month's campaign.

  • Opt-out keywords you choose

You decide which words count as an opt-out, such as STOP, and Slide blocks the contact who sends one on every channel. No keywords are set by default, so this is a setup step rather than a setting you inherit.

  • Replies routed to a person

When a customer answers a campaign with a question, a flow can try buttons or an AI agent first and then hand over. The conversation waits in the shared inbox with assignment and notes, and the team is emailed.

  • One record for each customer

Tags, consent fields and every conversation sit on one contact, matched on phone number first and email second, so the segment for the next campaign is built from what you already know.

  • Delivery and cost reporting

Each campaign reports sent, delivered, read and failed messages with their cost, and every automation run keeps a step-by-step log for checking where a reply went.

Example workflow, illustrative

A reorder reminder campaign with the stop line built in, and a reply a person answers

A water-filter shop in Nairobi sells on Shopify and reminds past buyers when replacement cartridges are due. This is how one round of reminders runs.

  1. Trigger

A campaign to the consented segment

The shop schedules a WhatsApp campaign to a segment: contacts tagged "filter-buyer" whose marketing consent field says yes. Blocked and unsubscribed contacts are left out automatically, whatever the segment says.

  2. Action

A marketing template with the stop line inside it

The customer receives an approved English template: "Your filter cartridge is due for a change. Tap Reorder to have one delivered. From [your business name]. Reply STOP to stop all our messages." The sender and the opt-out are in the message itself, not behind a link.

  3. Exception

    Another customer replies STOP

STOP was added to the opt-out keywords during setup, so Slide blocks that contact, and every later campaign on every channel skips them. Had the keyword list been left empty, the reply would have been just another message in the inbox.

  4. Customer interaction

A question instead of a tap

A third customer replies in Swahili, asking whether the cartridge fits an older model. The reply starts the shop's inbound WhatsApp flow; its menu has no answer for that, and the flow was built to hand over anything it cannot classify.

  5. Human handoff

    A teammate answers in Swahili

A handoff step puts the conversation in the inbox with the customer's tags and history and emails the team. A teammate replies in Swahili, which is allowed for free-form messages inside the 24-hour window, and confirms the right cartridge.

  6. Recorded outcome

Reorders and opt-outs are on record

The customer who asked keeps the conversation and a "reordered" tag on their contact; the one who replied STOP shows as blocked. The campaign report gives delivered, read and failed counts with cost for every reminder sent.

An illustration of how the workflow runs, not a customer case study. Names, numbers and messages are examples.

Setup

What you need, and the launch sequence

Requirements

  • A verified Meta business and a number free of the apps

The number must sit in a Meta business portfolio, Meta verifies the business before you can send at scale (allow several business days), and the number cannot also be registered on the WhatsApp consumer or Business app.

  • Express consent on file

Kenya's Data Protection Act allows commercial use of personal data with express consent. Record it in a contact field from a button the customer tapped, and build marketing segments on that field.

  • Opt-out keywords added before the first campaign

Add STOP and any other word you will print in your templates. Until you do, an opt-out reply blocks nobody.

  • Marketing templates that carry the opt-out

Every marketing template should name the business and say in its body how to stop with a one-word reply. Meta approves each template, and they are written in English because Swahili is not in Slide's editor.

  • A payment method for a dollar workspace

Slide bills workspaces outside India in US dollars. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.

Launch sequence

  1. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team, then start Meta business verification and connect the number (setup guide).

  2. Import past customers, mark those who gave express consent in a consent field, and keep everyone else out of marketing segments (contacts guide).

  3. Add opt-out keywords, then write each marketing template with the business name and a one-word stop instruction that ends every message from you.

  4. Build the reminder as a campaign to the consented segment, and an inbound flow that hands over any reply the menu cannot classify (automation builder).

  5. Send the first campaign to a test segment of teammates, reply STOP from one phone, check that the contact is blocked, and only then widen the segment.

Local considerations

What is specific to Kenya

  • A free, prominent stop in every marketing message

Regulation 15 of the Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 requires a free way to stop in each direct marketing message, and Regulation 17 requires the opt-out to be stated prominently: a one-word reply for text messages, a link for email, and an option to opt out of all. A WhatsApp template carries only the words you submit, so put the stop instruction in the body of every marketing template.

  • Opt-out keywords start empty in Slide

When a contact sends an opt-out keyword, Slide blocks them and skips them on every channel, which matches a request to opt out of all. The keyword list is empty until you fill it, though, so a STOP reply blocks nobody on a fresh account.

Source:Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 (opens in a new tab)
  • Express consent for commercial use

Section 37 of the Data Protection Act 2019 allows personal data to be used for commercial purposes only with express consent or legal authority, and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner oversees the Act. Keep the consent answer on the contact so campaigns can be limited to the people who gave it.

  • Priced in Rest of Africa, billed in dollars

Kenya has no WhatsApp rate line of its own: messages to +254 numbers are priced on Meta's Rest of Africa line, and there is no shilling rate card. Slide bills workspaces outside India in US dollars.

  • Kiswahili is official; templates are not in Swahili

Kiswahili and English are Kenya's official languages. Slide's template editor does not include Swahili, so templates go out in English; inside the 24-hour window your team can reply in Swahili, and an AI agent will too if its instructions say so.

This is a summary of public rules for orientation, not legal advice. Slide does not certify that any business's messaging complies with local law; check your own obligations with a qualified adviser.

Evidence

What these claims rest on

  • Kenya's 2021 Regulations require a free opt-out in every direct marketing message

Regulation 15(2): a free way to stop. Regulation 15(3): marketing email must not disguise the sender and must give a valid opt-out address. Regulation 17: each message states the opt-out prominently (a one-word reply for text messages, a link for email) and offers "opt out of all".

Pricing

How the cost is made up

Slide bills a workspace created with a non-Indian number in US dollars. Plans and current prices are on the pricing page, paid plans include a 14-day trial, and the payment method is worth confirming with the Slide team before you subscribe.

Meta charges each WhatsApp message at the Rest of Africa rate for its category. A reorder reminder or an offer is a marketing template; replies your team sends inside the 24-hour window count as service messages, which Meta has charged since 1 October 2026 after the first 1,000 each month per business number.

For a reorder programme, the monthly cost is the number of reminders delivered times the marketing rate, plus replies to the customers who answer. Slide draws it from a prepaid wallet and stops sending at zero; your account's exact per-message prices are in the wallet.

Fit and limits

When this fits, and what it does not do

A good fit when

  • A Shopify store with repeat purchases, refills or replacement parts.
  • A consented customer list that should get scheduled offers, with a clean record of opt-outs.
  • A team that can answer campaign replies, in Swahili or English, from a shared inbox.

Needs a person when

  • Replies that ask a real question instead of tapping a button.
  • Complaints about a product or a delivery.
  • Anyone who says they never agreed to hear from you: check the consent record before replying.

Not established by this page

  • Swahili templates: not in Slide's editor today.
  • Payment methods for the US dollar subscription: confirm with the Slide team.
  • Any rise in repeat purchases: Slide publishes no measured outcomes.
  • Where customer data is hosted. Ask the Slide team before you sign.
Questions

Direct answers

What must every WhatsApp marketing message in Kenya include?

Under the Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021, each direct marketing message must offer a free way to stop, stated prominently, and the person must be able to opt out of all marketing. For text messages the Regulations describe a one-word reply; for email, a link and a sender that is not disguised. On WhatsApp, your business name in the template and a line such as "Reply STOP to stop all our messages" follow that pattern. Check the exact wording with your adviser.

Does Slide stop messaging someone who replies STOP?

Yes, once you have told it to. Slide blocks a contact who sends one of your opt-out keywords and skips them on every channel from then on, including later campaigns. The keyword list is empty by default, so add STOP, and any other word you print in your templates, before your first campaign.

Can we send WhatsApp templates in Swahili?

Not from Slide's template editor today: its 25 languages include English but not Swahili. Inside the 24-hour window that opens when a customer writes, your team can reply in Swahili, and an AI agent can too if its instructions tell it to. Campaigns and reminders are templates, so they go out in English.

Why are Kenyan numbers priced under "Rest of Africa"?

Meta sets WhatsApp prices by the recipient's country, and Kenya does not have a line of its own; messages to +254 numbers share the Rest of Africa rates. There is no Kenyan shilling rate card, and Slide bills your workspace in US dollars, so budget in dollars. Your account's exact per-message prices are shown in the Slide wallet.

Can we call customers on WhatsApp from a Kenyan number?

Meta's calling rules do not exclude Kenyan business numbers, unlike Nigerian or Canadian ones, but a number needs a messaging limit of at least 2,000 before it can place calls. Customers can also call the business on WhatsApp. If calls matter to you, check your number's messaging limit in Meta's tools before you plan around them.

Who answers when a customer replies to a campaign?

Whoever you route it to. A flow can offer buttons first, try an AI agent on your knowledge base, and hand anything it cannot classify to the team; the handoff step leaves the conversation in the shared inbox with what was said and emails the team. It does not pause automations for good and there is no hand-back step, so end the flow at the handoff.

What does Kenya's Data Protection Act mean for our customer list?

Section 37 allows commercial use of personal data only with express consent or legal authority, and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner oversees the Act. Before you import past customers into a marketing segment, separate those who gave express consent and record the answer in a contact field. Slide has no double opt-in and no contacts export, so the consent record lives on the contact in Slide.

Is there an email page for Kenya too?

Yes: email automation in Kenya applies the same Regulations to email, which also require a sender that is not disguised and a valid opt-out address. On email, marketing should go through campaigns or sequences, which add an unsubscribe; the automation send-email step does not add one or check the unsubscribe list.

Key facts

Key facts: WhatsApp automation in Kenya

Slide is a reasonable fit for a Kenyan business with a consented customer list that wants reorder reminders and campaigns on WhatsApp, with opt-outs that block a contact everywhere and a shared inbox where the team answers replies. It is a weaker fit if you need templates in Swahili, billing in shillings, a consent report you can export, or a bot that stays paused after a person takes over.
