Email marketing automation for businesses in Kenya
Slide, by Synquic, lets a business in Kenya send email campaigns and follow-up sequences from its own domain, collect sign-ups through forms, and route replies to a shared team inbox. Kenya's Data Protection Act requires express consent to use personal data commercially, and its 2021 Regulations require every marketing email to show who sent it, give a valid opt-out address and a prominent opt-out link, and offer to opt out of everything. Slide's campaigns and sequences carry the unsubscribe; its automation email step does not, so it is not the place for marketing.

The buyer and the problem
Businesses in Kenya, from online shops to colleges and professional firms, that email customers and enquirers in English or Kiswahili and want sign-ups, follow-ups and opt-outs handled the same way every time.
Email lists grow from web forms, events and past orders, and the record of who agreed to what can be thin. Kenya's rules make that record matter: commercial use needs express consent, and every marketing email needs a clear way out. A team needs one place where the consent source sits on the contact, an unsubscribe stops all marketing mail, and replies reach a person.
Supported capabilities, mapped to the product
Sign-up forms that start the follow-up
Website popups, contact forms and landing pages can add the contact and start an automation. There is no double opt-in, so the consent statement belongs on the form itself.

Custom fields and tags can hold how and when each person agreed, and segments can then send only to people with consent on record.
Source:Contacts guideA sender people recognise
Mail goes out from your authenticated domain. If you A/B test the sender name, keep the business's own name in every variant.
One unsubscribe that covers everything
Campaign emails carry one-click unsubscribe and sequence emails an unsubscribe line. An address that unsubscribes is skipped by the workspace's later campaigns and sequences; there is no preference page for opting out of only some mail.
Sequences that stop on a reply
A first email and up to 5 follow-ups, 1 hour to 60 days apart, end for anyone who replies once the mailbox is connected.

Replies arrive in the shared inbox for assignment. An AI agent can answer routine email questions from your knowledge base and hand the rest to the team; AI steps depend on the plan.
A course enquiry, from web form to admissions
A private college in Nairobi collects enquiries for its evening diploma courses through a form on its website. This is how one enquiry is followed up.
- Trigger
An enquiry with a separate consent choice
A working professional fills in the enquiry form and ticks a separate box agreeing to receive course news by email. The submission creates her contact and starts the follow-up automation.
- Action
Consent is written to her record
The automation saves "course news: yes" and the form name to fields on her contact and adds a consent tag, then adds her to a three-email information sequence about the intake.
- Customer interaction
Information emails with a clear way out
Each email comes from the college's own domain under its own name, in English with a short Kiswahili summary, and ends with an unsubscribe link and a reply address for questions.
- Human handoff
Her reply goes to admissions
She replies asking whether fees can be paid in instalments. The reply ends her sequence, lands in the shared inbox and is assigned to an admissions officer, who answers from the thread.
- Exception
If she asks to stop by replying
Had she written "please stop emailing me" instead of using the link, her sequence would still end on the reply, but her address would not be on the unsubscribe list. The officer blocks the contact, which Slide skips on every channel, so no later campaign reaches her.
- Recorded outcome
A record the college can rely on
Her contact shows the consent field and its source, the emails sent, her reply and the officer's answer. Next month's intake campaign goes only to the segment with consent on record.

What you need, and the launch sequence
Requirements
- An authenticated sending domain
Publish the DNS records Slide shows for your domain and verify it, so mail carries your business identity rather than an unfamiliar sender.
Source:Email channel setup guide - Forms that ask for consent explicitly
Slide does not run a double opt-in, so the form wording and a separate consent choice are your evidence of express consent.

Launch sequence
Verify the domain and connect the mailbox (email channel setup guide).
Add consent fields, then import existing contacts with their consent status (contacts guide), leaving out anyone without a record of express consent.
Connect your forms so each submission writes the consent choice and starts the follow-up (automation guide).
Write the sequence and campaign templates with the business name as the sender and the unsubscribe link in the footer (campaigns guide).
Agree that anyone who asks to stop by reply is blocked the same day, since a reply alone does not unsubscribe them.
Use automation "send email" steps only for receipts, confirmations and other transactional mail.
What is specific to Kenya
Express consent for commercial use
Section 37 of the Data Protection Act 2019 allows personal data to be used for commercial purposes only with the person's express consent or other legal authority, under the oversight of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. Record how each address was given and what the person agreed to.
Source:Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 (opens in a new tab)Contacts guideNo disguised sender, and a valid opt-out address
Regulation 15 of the Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 says marketing email must not disguise or conceal who sent it and must give a valid address for opting out. Sending from your own authenticated domain and a monitored mailbox handles the mechanics; the sender name and footer are yours to get right.
Source:Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 (opens in a new tab)Email channel setup guideA prominent opt-out link and "opt out of all"
Regulation 17 requires each marketing message to state the opt-out prominently, a link in the case of email, and to offer the choice to opt out of all direct marketing. Slide's unsubscribe stops every campaign and sequence to that address; check that each template shows the link where readers will see it.
Source:Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 (opens in a new tab)Campaigns guideCampaigns guideThe automation email step carries no opt-out
Emails sent by an automation step skip the unsubscribe and suppression lists and add no unsubscribe link. Under the 2021 Regulations a marketing email without an opt-out is exactly the gap to avoid, so route promotional mail through campaigns or sequences.
Source:Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 (opens in a new tab)English and Kiswahili
Kiswahili and English are Kenya's official languages. Email content is free text, so you can write in either or both; that differs from WhatsApp, where Slide's template editor has no Swahili option.

What these claims rest on
- Kenya's 2021 Regulations require a free opt-out in every direct marketing message
Regulation 15(2): a free way to stop. Regulation 15(3): marketing email must not disguise the sender and must give a valid opt-out address. Regulation 17: each message states the opt-out prominently (a one-word reply for text messages, a link for email) and offers "opt out of all".
Official sourceChecked 11 October 2026Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 (opens in a new tab) - Kenya's Data Protection Act 2019 allows commercial use of personal data only with express consent or legal authority
Section 37(1). The regulator is the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).
- Email campaigns support segments, A/B tests, open and click tracking, one-click unsubscribe and bounce suppression
A/B tests on subject, content, sender name or preview text; one-click unsubscribe; hard bounces and complaints are suppressed. Soft bounces are not suppressed and there is no list cleaning.
- Email sequences send a first email and up to 5 follow-ups that stop when the person replies
Follow-ups 1 hour to 60 days apart, threaded, stopped on reply (needs a connected mailbox). Each email carries an unsubscribe line by default, and unsubscribed, suppressed or bounced addresses are skipped. Sequences are single-path.
- Website popups, contact forms, landing-page forms and ad lead forms trigger follow-up automations
Form submissions from popups (including on Shopify storefronts), the site form, landing pages and Meta or Google lead forms start automations. There is no double opt-in.
How the cost is made up
Sending uses the email credits included in your Slide plan; extra credits can be bought, and a sequence that runs out pauses with a "no email credits" status until you add more. Plan details are on the pricing page, with a 14-day trial on paid plans and AI replies depending on the plan.
Slide bills workspaces outside India in US dollars, so a workspace created with a Kenyan number pays in dollars; there is no shilling billing. Confirm the payment method with the Slide team before you subscribe.
When this fits, and what it does not do
A good fit when
- Enquiry and sign-up follow-ups where consent is collected on your own forms.
- Newsletters and offers to customers with consent on record.
- Teams that write some of their email in Kiswahili.
Needs a person when
- Replies asking to stop, which a teammate turns into a block.
- Fee, payment and complaint questions.
- Requests from people to see or delete their data.
Not established by this page
- Whether your consent wording meets section 37: that is for your adviser.
- Inbox placement or open rates: Slide publishes no measured results.
- Where data is hosted. Ask the Slide team before you sign.
Direct answers
What do Kenya's rules require in a marketing email?
The Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 require a free way to stop in every direct marketing message. For email, the sender must not be disguised, there must be a valid opt-out address, and the opt-out must be stated prominently as a link, with a choice to opt out of all direct marketing. Separately, section 37 of the Data Protection Act needs express consent for commercial use of personal data.
Source:Data Protection (General) Regulations 2021 (opens in a new tab)Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 (opens in a new tab)How does Slide's unsubscribe handle "opt out of all"?
Slide's unsubscribe is all or nothing within a workspace: one click on a campaign's link or a sequence's unsubscribe line stops every later campaign and sequence to that address. There is no page for opting out of only some topics. Whether that arrangement satisfies Regulation 17 for your mailings is for your adviser to confirm.
Source:Campaigns guideCampaigns guideData Protection (General) Regulations 2021 (opens in a new tab)Can we use Slide's automations to send promotional email?
Not through the automation "send email" step. It does not add an unsubscribe link or check the unsubscribe and suppression lists, so it suits transactional mail such as receipts and confirmations. Send promotions as a campaign or a sequence, which carry the unsubscribe and skip opted-out addresses.
Source:Campaigns guideCampaigns guideHow do we show that someone gave express consent?
Collect it on your own form with clear wording, and write the answer and the source to fields on the contact when the form is submitted. Slide has no double opt-in, and contacts cannot be exported today, so keep a copy of your consent records, with the date each was given, in a system you control as well.
Source:Automation builder guideContacts guideCan we write emails in Kiswahili?
Yes. Email content is free text, so campaigns and sequences can be in Kiswahili, English or both. An AI agent answering replies uses Kiswahili only if its instructions tell it to. The Slide dashboard is in English.
Source:Constitution of Kenya, Article 7 (opens in a new tab)Automation builder guideWhat happens when someone replies instead of clicking unsubscribe?
The reply ends their sequence, provided the mailbox is connected, and appears in the shared inbox. It does not put them on the unsubscribe list, so a teammate should block the contact; blocked contacts are skipped on every channel.

Slide fits a Kenyan business that collects consent on its own forms and wants follow-up sequences, campaigns and replies in one place, with an unsubscribe that stops all marketing mail and consent fields on every contact. It is a weaker fit if you need a preference centre with topic-level opt-outs, double opt-in, a consent-record export, or promotional emails sent straight from automations; those are not built.
