WhatsApp customer retention for brands selling in India

Slide, by Synquic, lets a business in India bring past customers back on WhatsApp: Shopify reorder and win-back events mark who is due, and scheduled campaigns send approved marketing templates only to the segment that agreed to hear from you, skipping anyone unsubscribed or blocked. Templates can be written in English and eight Indian languages, SMS fallback reaches Indian numbers when WhatsApp fails, and every marketing message is charged on Meta's India rate line from a wallet billed in rupees.

Who it is for

The buyer and the problem

Marketing and CRM teams at brands and retailers selling to customers in India, on Shopify or with an imported customer list, who want people who bought once to buy again.

Sending the same offer to the whole list costs money on every message, reaches people who never agreed to it, and invites blocks. Sending nothing lets repeat purchases slip. Retention on WhatsApp works when the right past customers hear from you at a pace you have chosen, in a language they read, with a one-word way to stop.

What Slide does

Supported capabilities, mapped to the product

  • Store events that say who is due

A connected Shopify store sends reorder, win-back, back-in-stock, price-drop and review-request events, among about 20, and each can start an automation, for example one that tags the customer as due for a reminder.

  • Segments built on one customer record

Every channel writes to one contact, matched on phone first, with tags, custom fields, segments and lifecycle stages. Consent, preferred language and purchase tags sit side by side, so a segment can require all three.

  • Scheduled campaigns of approved templates

Campaigns send Meta-approved marketing templates to a tag or segment at a scheduled time, with delayed follow-up steps, so the cadence is something you set rather than something that happens.

  • Opted-out customers are left alone

Campaigns skip unsubscribed and blocked contacts. A customer who opts out is blocked and skipped on every channel, once you have added the words that count as opting out.

  • A second route when WhatsApp fails

If a campaign message cannot be delivered on WhatsApp, it can fall back to email, or to SMS for Indian numbers.

  • Replies reach the team

A customer who answers a campaign opens a 24-hour window. The reply lands in the shared inbox, where a bot, an AI agent or a teammate can pick it up, and a handoff step emails the team when a person is needed.

  • Delivery, read and cost per campaign

WhatsApp reports show what was sent, delivered, read and failed, and what it cost, so a campaign that annoys more than it helps shows up quickly.

Example workflow, illustrative

Reorder reminders for a pet food store, and one win-back for those who lapse

A Shopify store selling pet food and supplies across India wants past buyers to reorder without being messaged every week. This is how one customer is handled.

  1. Trigger

Consent is recorded before any offer

On her first visit, a storefront popup asks whether she wants reorder reminders and offers on WhatsApp, and in which language. She ticks the box herself and picks Hindi. The submission tags her "WhatsApp offers: yes" and saves her language choice to a contact field.

  2. Action

Store events mark who is due

When the store's reorder event fires for her, an automation adds a "Reorder due" tag. When she places a new order, the order event removes it, so the tag only ever marks customers who have not yet reordered.

  3. Customer interaction

A weekly reminder, in her language, to the right segment

Each Monday the team schedules a campaign of an approved Hindi marketing template to contacts tagged both "WhatsApp offers: yes" and "Reorder due", with a link to her usual product. Customers without the consent tag, and anyone unsubscribed or blocked, are not in the audience.

  4. Human handoff

Her question goes to a person

She replies asking whether she can switch to a grain-free food for an older dog. A handoff step leaves the conversation in the inbox with her order tags and emails the team, and a teammate who knows the range answers inside the 24-hour window.

  5. Exception

If WhatsApp fails, or she says stop

If the template cannot be delivered, the campaign falls back to SMS for her Indian number, sent under TRAI's DLT rules. If another customer replies "STOP" and that word is on the opt-out list, Slide blocks them and every channel skips them; a refusal written in other words reaches the inbox and needs a teammate to act on it.

  6. Action

One win-back message for customers who lapse

Customers the store's win-back event marks as lapsed, and who carry the consent tag, receive one win-back template in a campaign the team schedules on the first of the month. The team chose one message, not a series: after the send it removes the "Lapsed" tag from that audience, so a customer who ignores it is not chased.

  7. Recorded outcome

Reorders in Shopify, messages in the reports

Repeat orders are counted in Shopify, because Slide does not show WhatsApp revenue. Slide's campaign reports show delivered, read, failed and cost for each send, and the team watches opt-outs alongside them before changing the cadence.

An illustration of how the workflow runs, not a customer case study. Names, numbers and messages are examples.

Setup

What you need, and the launch sequence

Requirements

  • A connected Shopify store

Reorder and win-back events come from Shopify, the only store platform Slide supports. Without it, retention segments have to be built from imported contacts and tags.

    Source:Shopify guideIntegrations guide
  • A record of who agreed to marketing

Slide skips unsubscribed and blocked contacts, but it does not decide who opted in. Collect consent in a form or in the chat, store it as a tag or field, keep your own record of when it was given, and build every retention segment on it. Slide forms have no double opt-in.

  • Marketing templates approved by Meta

Every reminder and win-back message is a template Meta approves before it can be sent. Submit one version per language you plan to use.

  • Opt-out keywords

The WhatsApp opt-out keyword list starts empty. Add the words customers will use, in English and in the languages you send in, before the first campaign.

  • Verified Meta business and an eligible number

A Meta business portfolio, business verification before sending at scale, and a number that is not registered on the WhatsApp apps.

Launch sequence

  1. Connect the store (Shopify guide) and the WhatsApp number (setup guide), and start Meta business verification.

  2. Import past customers if they are not already in Slide, and add tags for consent, language and product line in contacts.

  3. Build the automations that add and remove the "Reorder due" and "Lapsed" tags from store events in the automation builder.

  4. Write the reminder and win-back templates in each language, include a line that says how to stop, and submit them for approval.

  5. Add opt-out keywords, then schedule the campaigns to segments that require the consent tag, and decide how often any one customer can be messaged.

  6. Before you switch SMS fallback on, confirm with the Slide team how sender IDs and templates are registered under DLT for your account. Then launch to a small segment first and read the delivery, read and opt-out numbers before widening it.

Local considerations

What is specific to retention messaging in India

  • DPDP consent must be as easy to withdraw as to give

The DPDP Act 2023 expects consent through a clear affirmative action, specific to the purpose, and withdrawable as easily as it was given; most obligations under the rules notified in November 2025 apply from around May 2027. If a tick on a popup was enough to say yes, a one-word reply should be enough to say no, which in Slide means adding opt-out keywords to a list that starts empty.

  • Every retention message is a marketing charge on the India line

Meta charges each delivered marketing template at the rate for +91 numbers, so cadence translates directly into spend. Meta bills Indian businesses in rupees, and Indian accounts billed in another currency must move to INR billing by 31 December 2026.

  • SMS fallback reaches Indian numbers, under telecom rules

Slide's SMS fallback works only for Indian numbers. Those messages are SMS, so TRAI's commercial communication rules and DLT registration apply to them. Confirm with the Slide team how sender IDs and templates are registered for your account before you switch fallback on.

Source:TRAI: TCCCPR (opens in a new tab)
  • Send in the language each customer chose

India's Constitution lists 22 languages. Slide's template editor covers English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam; Punjabi, Urdu and Odia are not available. Store each customer's choice as a field and send one approved version per language segment.

This is a summary of public rules for orientation, not legal advice. Slide does not certify that any business's messaging complies with local law; check your own obligations with a qualified adviser.

Evidence

What these claims rest on

  • Shopify events trigger WhatsApp and email automations, including abandoned checkout and order updates

About 20 store events: abandoned checkout and cart, order confirmation, cash on delivery, shipped, out for delivery, delivered (fulfilment succeeded), review request, win-back, reorder, back in stock and price drop. Shopify is the only supported store platform; the cart trigger needs the storefront embed. A cash-on-delivery confirm or cancel reply does not update the Shopify order.

  • WhatsApp campaigns send approved templates to tags or segments, with scheduling and delayed follow-ups

Scheduled broadcasts to tags or segments, delayed follow-up steps, and an email fallback. Unsubscribed and blocked contacts are skipped. SMS fallback works for Indian numbers only.

  • India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 sets the consent standard for personal data

Consent must be free, specific, informed, unconditional and unambiguous, with a clear affirmative action, and withdrawable as easily as given. Section 16 allows transfers abroad unless the government restricts a country.

  • WhatsApp requires opt-in before a business messages someone, and opt-outs must be honoured

Businesses may contact people only after receiving opt-in permission and must respect all requests, on or off WhatsApp, to block or opt out. The opt-in must name the business.

Pricing

How the cost is made up

The Slide plan is billed in rupees for a workspace created with an Indian number, and sets which features you can use; see the pricing page for plans and current prices. Paid plans start with a 14-day trial.

Each delivered marketing template is charged by Meta at the India rate and drawn from your prepaid Slide wallet, which must hold enough for the campaign because sends stop when it runs out. When customers reply, your answers are service messages, charged since 1 October 2026 after the first 1,000 each month for every business number. SMS fallback is separate usage.

Retention cost is therefore set mostly by two choices you control: how large the consented segment is, and how often each customer is messaged. The exact per-message price for your account is shown in the wallet.

Fit and limits

When this fits, and what it does not do

A good fit when

  • Products bought again on a predictable cycle, such as consumables, food, care products or refills.
  • A Shopify store whose reorder and win-back events can mark who is due.
  • A customer base that has given WhatsApp consent you can show, with its date.

Needs a person when

  • Questions about switching products, dosage, sizing or suitability.
  • Complaints that surface when a past customer is reminded of a bad order.
  • Anyone who asks why they are being messaged, or asks to be removed in their own words.

Not established by this page

  • Any lift in repeat purchase rate: Slide publishes no measured outcomes for this workflow.
  • A built-in limit on how many marketing messages one contact receives: plan the cadence in your schedules and segments.
  • Where customer data is hosted. Ask the Slide team before you sign.
Questions

Direct answers

How do brands in India use Slide to win back past customers on WhatsApp?

They connect Shopify so reorder and win-back events tag the customers who are due, keep a consent tag on everyone who agreed to marketing, and schedule campaigns of approved templates to the segment that has both. Replies land in a shared inbox, where a teammate can answer product questions, and SMS fallback covers Indian numbers that WhatsApp cannot reach.

How do we make sure retention messages only reach people who agreed to them?

WhatsApp's policy requires opt-in that names your business before you message someone first, and the DPDP Act asks for specific, informed consent that can be withdrawn easily. Slide does not decide who opted in: you record consent as a tag or field when it is given, keep your own record of when, and build every campaign segment on it. Campaigns then skip unsubscribed and blocked contacts automatically. Slide forms have no double opt-in, so word the consent question clearly.

How often should past customers hear from us, and can Slide hold that line?

Slide sends what you schedule to the segments you choose; this page does not establish a built-in cap on messages per contact. Cadence is controlled by design: a weekly reminder that only reaches customers tagged "Reorder due", a tag removed when they order again, and a single win-back message rather than a series. Each delivered template is a marketing charge, so frequency shows up in the wallet as well as in opt-outs.

What happens when a customer replies to a campaign?

The reply opens a 24-hour window and appears in the shared inbox with the customer's history. A keyword bot or AI agent can answer simple questions, and a handoff step brings in a teammate and emails the team. If the reply is a refusal in words that are not on your opt-out list, a teammate has to act on it, because only listed keywords block automatically.

Which store events can start retention messages?

From a connected Shopify store: reorder, win-back, back in stock, price drop and review request, among about 20 events that also cover orders and deliveries. Shopify is the only supported store platform; WooCommerce is not built. Without a store, segments can still be built from imported contacts and tags.

Source:Shopify guideIntegrations guide

What has to be in place before the first campaign, and how long does it take?

A verified Meta business portfolio, an eligible number, approved marketing templates, opt-out keywords, a consent tag on the contacts you will message, and wallet balance; if you want SMS fallback, confirm with the Slide team how sender IDs and templates are registered under DLT for your account. Meta verification takes several business days and every template needs Meta's approval. Synquic says it migrates contacts for free and aims to have a first automation live within one business day, outside those approvals.

What will WhatsApp retention cost us in India?

The Slide plan is billed in rupees; the per-message cost is Meta's marketing rate for Indian numbers, drawn from the wallet for each delivered template. Replies to customers who answer are service messages, charged since 1 October 2026 after 1,000 free each month per number, and any SMS fallback adds its own usage. The size of the consented segment and how often you message it decide the total.

Can campaigns go out in Tamil, Marathi or other Indian languages, and what support is there?

Templates can be written in English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam; Punjabi, Urdu and Odia are not in the editor. Keep the customer's language on the contact and run one campaign per language segment. The Slide dashboard is in English, and Synquic offers email support on plans and a bookable demo.

What should we track to know retention is working?

Repeat orders and revenue in Shopify, since Slide does not show WhatsApp revenue; delivered, read, failed and cost for each campaign in Slide's reports; and opt-outs and blocks after each send. If opt-outs climb after a change in cadence, reverse the change before widening the audience.

Source:Campaigns guide

Why might Slide suit a retention programme in India, and what should we compare?

Slide connects Shopify events, segments on one contact record, scheduled campaigns that skip unsubscribed and blocked contacts, and SMS fallback for Indian numbers, billed in rupees. Compare platforms on revenue attribution for WhatsApp (Slide does not show it), consent handling (Slide has no double opt-in and no contacts export), template languages, how marketing charges are passed on, and certifications; Slide's SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001 work and DPDP Act implementation are in progress.

Key facts

Key facts: WhatsApp automation for customer retention in India

Slide is a reasonable fit for a Shopify brand selling in India that wants reorder and win-back messages to reach only consented customers at a cadence it sets: store events, segments on one contact record, scheduled campaigns that skip opted-out contacts, Indian template languages and SMS fallback are built, and billing is in rupees. It is a weaker fit if you need WhatsApp revenue attribution in the same dashboard, a store platform other than Shopify, or a consent audit export.
