Somebody commenting a keyword on your post has raised their hand in public. It is the clearest buying signal social media produces, and the window on it is minutes.
The four rules
In order of how much they matter
Rule one
Deliver what the comment asked for, first
The DM opens with the thing they commented for. Not a greeting, not a qualifying question, not a menu. The link, the code, the guide. Everything else comes after.
Rule two
Reply to the comment too
A public reply tells everyone else scrolling that the mechanism works. It is the cheapest amplification available, and skipping it halves the response on the next post.
Rule three
One DM, then stop
The follow-up sequence is where comment-to-DM turns into the reason people mute you. Send what was asked for, offer one next step, and then wait for a reply.
Rule four
Handle the near-misses
People will comment "info", "INFO!", "info pls" and "how much". Match loosely on intent, not exactly on a string, or most of your highest-intent audience gets nothing.
The rate limit that catches everyone
A post that outperforms produces a burst of comments in a few minutes. Queue the sends and pace them. A flow that tries to DM four hundred people at once gets throttled, and the ones at the back of the queue get their answer an hour later, which is the same as not getting it.
What to put in the DM
| Element | Include | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The asset | Always | It is what they asked for |
| One-line context | Always | Tells them what it is before they click |
| A single next step | Usually | One question, answerable in a word |
| A menu | Rarely | Menus belong in support, not in delivery |
| A discount | Only if promised | An unpromised discount trains people to wait |
Common questions
It should read like your brand and never claim to be a specific person. Pretending is what turns a useful automation into a trust problem the first time someone replies and gets a flow.
If they did not reply to the first DM, one follow-up after roughly a day is the most that reliably helps. Beyond that, response rate falls and mute rate does not.
